Design Dilemma Living Rooms Home Decorating

Living room layout and decoration... NO idea what to do! Help!

Hi,

I started with the Idea of a mixture of industrial, country and french decor... bought a couple of peaces of furniture to repurpose and upgrade, but now just don't know what to do!

Nothing was purposely bought every piece of furniture or lamp or decorating item have memories and an history.

Just do not know what to do now!!!

Can anybody please help!

The room is 3.4m x 4.5m, the access is through the kitchen dinner, purposely I had the door moved. I prefer it to be a family room rather than a formal room accessed from the entrance.

Lots to think about... It does not matter what you have but where you place it to make it work. And what is there that make the room become one (sounds very yoda ) :)

How about putting the sofa by the window. The box where the sofa was. See what that looks like? The side table in between the sofa and the chair. Add some shelving to the alcoves. Re: photos There are lots of photo places that will make photos much larger for a portrait. Group pictures together on the shelf or on the side table. You do not need to space everything out.

Some questions:

1.What colour are the walls ?

2.What colours do you like ? Is there a favourite material you like that can be made into a paint colour or made into some cushions. Then use the colour throughout as accents.

3. What items did you want to repurpose? What colour ?

4. Can the cabinet fit in the alcove?

5. Does the fireplace work?

6. Do you have any larger pictures, photos ?

7. Are both lamps the same size ? What are they to be the same colour ?

8. Will there be a TV in the room ?

Some pics to help. Are there any elements in these pics that help?

So change the placement of furniture like in the pictures. Put everything you want in the room and play around with them.

Hi, I agree with creating two zones but I would do it the other way round. Have tv to the left of the fire place and use this as cozy tv area and the area by the window you could have a study come reading area. Bookshelf, maybe a small desk, armchair with side table and reading lamp...whatever you might need the space for. I spy in the photo you have young baby or little one? So perhaps you could have something safe to play with, a cozy rug with a couple of knitted pouffes to roll around on. I love the industrial look so I say go for it. If you paint the fireplace a dark colour I would balance it out by also painting the alcove where the settee is now the same colour but add a lamp to this area to make it feel more cozy. Some grasscloth wallpaper or something textured would look great either side of the fireplace. Hope to have helped, here's some inspiration.

It's almost identical to the layout of the ground floor in my old house, except my kitchen was accessed from the diner. If keeping the tv, etc, where it is now I would consider removing the fireplace so that you could have a sofa along that wall and then either a second sofa backing onto the window or a chaise sofa and a chair. The other option might be to move the tv to the window corner and have a sofa or l-shape seating backing onto the dining area. Although this option might block the walk through from the hall it would allow you to keep a fireplace as a feature without competing with the tv too much.

In some ways it’s good to have such a large TV. Let’s face it you are sitting a very long way from it in your lovely big room! You are wondering how to make the door end of the room look used. I think we are talking trade offs with the design here, in terms of cost and layout. If you can spend a bit of money it might be worth investigating how to design a new fireplace that incorporates the TV. Sounds horrendous I know, but because you have a large tv it might work, though you’d have to be VERY careful about balance in the positioning and get specialist advice on insulating the tv from the heat from the fire. You also need to consider how much time you spend watching tv and if the upwards angle of view might give you a stiff neck from where you place the sofa...BUT... this would enable you to bring Carolina’s room layout back towards the door, making the room look more occupied, you could then also use celery girls idea to put a sort of separate more intimate seating area in the bay window - two statement chairs and a little table, maybe flanked by a pair of enormous table lamps in front of the curtains to fill the corners and highlight the curtains at night.

Create ideabooks! (below some random photos) And don't be afraid of dark colors, wall paper (linen look?), and/or adding more wood (crown mold, faux beams?). How about keeping the walls offwhite and paint the ceiling a very pale robin's egg blue? Love the hutch you got there!

Hi, would you be up for painting some or all the walls? There are some beautiful paint colours available at the moment. I also feel the furniture is a bit of a mish mash and a bit old fashioned (sorry!). I’m not keen on over matched furniture but there is no cohesion? I would also change the net curtains for white wooden blinds, they’ll provide privacy but in a more modern way.

I think the problem is scale and tone. You have one massive piece of dark furniture in quite a small space which is hard to balance. And barely anything else that tones in with it. I would swap out your side table to one in the same dark wood tone to tie it in more. I would then add some colour to the room on the other side with darker/patterned curtains to balance it. Painting the chimney breast a much darker colour would also help. Then declutter and put all the bits and bobs in the fabulous dresser and remove the little shelf unit next to it which doesn’t go with it. Finally the little chest near the window is lovely but it is again dwarfed by the giant dresser. I’d use it somewhere else and get something taller made of dark wood and add some built in shelves above to add height - this would again balance the height of the dresser. Adding a plant or two to bring in a bit of life makes a huge difference. I would basically work everything around the big dresser and make it feel a bit more balanced. Have fun!

The wooden cabinet dominates the room. Are you strongly emotionally attached to it? Could you manage without it or put it in another room? Then build shelves and cupboards either side of the chimney breast. Or could you repurpose the cabinet by splitting it in half and putting one half either side of the chimney breast or have a joiner fit the doors to a framework with shelves either side of the chimney breast all preferably painted a light colour. I just feel that once the wall with the fireplace becomes the focus then everything else will fall into place.

With what you have, rejigging and removing a few pieces might give a more cohesive look. The arm chair could go where your chest is, use the chest as a low table under the window and to provide a link between with the couch. The photos might better in cabinet or wall hung. The couch could then be moved to a more central position on the wall. The large cabinet is tall, and it seems everything else is low, so am thinking that we need to bring something to give some height. So a tall lamp near the repositioned chair? Or at the end of the sofa? A tall classic , red wood style would tie into the large cabinet. Your current lamps are a bit 'fat' and squat - and aren't giving any height in the room. Also the red is too strong a color. Finding some tall and slender lamps, which could be black metal work but with material shades might be an option. , I think I would remove the unit between the large piece and the fireplace, the gray table between the chair and couch might work better there but it might need a bit of a face lift, however I'm not quite sure how. Am liking the coffee table so it's a keeper, but the plinth is not really working in here - time for it to shuffle off to another room possibly .
