Kitchen units boxing in...

Help and advice please!

Below is how the builders finished the tops of the units. Before the boxing in went on I never realised that the ceiling wasn't straight. Now it's like an eyesore. They also set it in (so the screws fixing it aren't visible) and the whole thing looks awful, it's the first thing you see when you come into the kitchen.

Shall we redo it in MDF and paint the same colour as walls? Any other advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It probably would be easier (and look better regardless) to paint it the same as the walls. Though even then the slant will be vissable but not as noticable. The only alternative I can think would be to use a bit of stage sliehgt of hand and paint a false ceiling edge straight along the boxing.

The challenges, and pleasures, of houses where nothing is quite straight or square!
In truth, I think that the builders have made a great job of scribing in here.
However, having the boxing-in painted the same colour as your units is highlighting the uneven line at the ceiling. If you paint the boxing-in the same colour as your ceiling, then it will be the straight line across the top of your units that will draw the eye, instead.

I concur with Ed, you're better off with a builder who will organise everything for you as he goes. But, generally, you :- Need to know where the plumbing and drainage work is going, Then you build your shell up ( the steel / the window work ) Then first fix plumbing and electrics, ( know where every light, lightswitch, socket cover and tap is going. Do the floor Put the kitchen in Finish the plumbing ( taps ) / Electrics (socket covers, lights ) Basically, you need to know down to the last light switch what is going where, plan for it meticulously, and you shouldn't go wrong! Make the unit covering the box into a small built in Welsh Dresser type of display unit by adding shelves on top. The finish can be as modern or rustic as you like. Then use these shelves to display cookery books or sculptures or whatever makes you happy. This would give a more individual look to the space, making it truly yours and will solve the problem without just looking like a random kitchen unit.

Ignore the roofline as much as possible. Place the boiler in a cabinet with a height that ends where the upper cabinets start. Tall cabinets with fridge freezer and oven are against the other wall, together with a 'coffee niche'. Cabinet with washing machine the same height as the boilet cabinet, assuming you don't have a dryer.

Is this an opportunity to have a shallow cupboard at the end here? I've always wanted to be able to do that myself. There are loads of ideas on Houzz for that, either opening out to a command station with a noticeboard, keys etc, or perhaps somewhere to store the ironing board, brooms, stepladder etc. Then the side of your cupboard is another matching door instead.

Thank you Kingfisher Designs and Jen. Yes, I never even realised the ceiling wasn't straight until this bedroom became a kitchen! And yes again, will get the builder to rebuilt and paint same as ceiling.

Hi Kate,

It may sound a bit radical but it's really not a huge task to remove the plasterboard and add extra timber to level out the ceiling.

You could even just do the area over the cabinets. Given the size of your kitchen, that would be less than 2 sheets of plasterboard.

It would be a permanent and proper solution. It would be better than looking at your kitchen in a few weeks time and thinking "that still looks terrible".

Ask your builder you might be surprised at how reasonable the cost is.

Thank you both. Don't think ceiling replacement would possible for various reasons, afraid will have to find a cosmetic solution rather than proper 'radical' :-(.
