Macerator toilet

Hi, we’re looking at installing a toilet in our under stairs cupboard, but it looks like our only option would be to install a macerator toilet as it’s too far from the soil stack, which is apparently above the kitchen/conservatory. Looking online macerators are a bad idea as they are noisy and break down a lot? We really need the additional toilet as we are a top heavy 4 bedroom mid-terraced house (previous owners extended and put 2 bedrooms in loft) with only 1 bathroom. Any ideas would be welcome re: whether a macerator toilet would be ok or whether you can see any other option for installing a downstairs toilet that wouldn’t require a macerator?

OK, do you have a solid ground floor or is it suspended? if its suspended even with a crawl space it might be possible to run a soil pipe across underneath like I did in my parents house when we moved the toilet but left the stack, we now have a 6m soil pipe running between beams to the old stack. Alternatively you could just have it as a urinal (or a toilet for urine only)? Not great but a workaround with a smaller pipe.

I'd agree a macerator is a terrible terrible idea, they leak, break, block and cause no end of trouble.

Thanks for the reply. It’s a solid floor so no option to go under with the pipe unfortunately. Also, with young kids no guarantee that they won’t poo in the toilet so urine only probably not an option either 🤦🏻‍♀️

Loving all these ideas! Do you know what type or style of shower you want to go for? There are so many options nowadays, Would you like wall-mounted or flushed ceiling, for example? Dear all, If you want to add a bathroom, you have to start there and work everything else round it. The reason for this being that you usually have to feed into the existing soil pipe. The soil pipe in this case is on the left hand outside wall. Without knowing if you can put another one on another outside wall ie the rear, which is probably unlikely, you have no option but to place a bathroom as close to the entrance on the left as possible. Obviously you could change the system in the new bathroom to a macerator style toilet, and technology has come a long way with regards those, but they are not for everyone. It may be possible to change the shape of the kitchen, remove the back entrance and push the front wall back, ( maybe not, as i presume it's instrumental in holding up the mezzanine ) If it were possible in theory:- You could - move the kitchen wall back to make more room in the lounge. Add a bathroom with pocket doors ahead of you when you come in and split the lounge down the middle. You could also have a pocket door entrance from the bedroom to the bathroom jack and jill style. That bedroom would also get the balcony.

It might well be the case that your drain runs front to back down the side of the house. This means that you may not need to join the soil pipe up to the back of the house but instead it could go straight down the bottom right hand corner of the house. It would mean digging up a bit of whatever is at the side- presumably this is the drive. Of course all of your hot and cold pipe work is currently at the back of the house and this would need to be moved which is where the additional installation cost comes from. I think an additional £1000 mentioned previously seems about right but the additional macerator may not be necessary. You have a further option of moving the bathroom to between your two big bedrooms. This is more complex as a soil pipe would then have to go through the house. Under the hall floor and out to the drains which are presumably under the drive. Additional work means additional cost but you might consider it if you need 4 bedrooms, or if 4 beds will increase the value, or if you were considering a loft conversion and the relocated bathroom was going to be in the way of stairs to the loft.

Upstairs joists run in the right direction. However there is a quarter landing one step down from the main landing. A supporting beam runs under the outer edge of the main landing and across the single step. So messing with this beam is a structural problem and would mean running the pipe over the quarter landing.

Could you take it out along the wall under/in the kitchen cupboards if you could find a link to the soil stack outside? or take it out the other way through the stairs and out the front? It might be a silly question but have you talked to your neighbour to see if they have a toilet under their stairs? if they do and they have a soil pipe you might be able to persuade them to let you patch into theirs.

I will definitely ask the plumber about whether it can go under the kitchen cupboards, although our oven is that side too, which might be an issue as it’s a freestanding gas oven. Our neighbour has a toilet in their conservatory (adjacent to our kitchen) but previous owners removed ours when they extended the kitchen out in the late 80s.

How about adding an ensuite upstairs? Depending on the layout if you could get it directly above the current soil stack or adjacent to the existing bathroom the plumbing wouldn't be a big job at all. For example carving out some space from the two loft bedrooms. It doesn't need to be a full bathroom just enough space for a space saving toilet?

Macerators work well in limited scenarios... Kids are never part those scenarios.
