Kitchen diner dilemma

Help, seen a house and have to make a quick decision. We would want to knock through to make a nice open/ modern kitchen dining area. Would probably like to incorporate the utility with the kitchen also. Is anyone good with ideas. We really can’t Visualize it. Would want a nice open work surface also with no cupboards above it. Any advise would be awesome. Thankyou in advance.

kitchen 8’5”x 8’2” 2.57m x2.46m. Utility 7’2 x 5’1”. 2.57m x 2.46m Dining 8’2” square. 2.49m

I didn’t add the lounge as didn’t think it necessary. It’s the opposite side of the hallway. The shape mirrors that of the dining and kitchen area.

Hi. I think it depends on the actual tile and layout as tiles aren't out of place in a hall. Wide tiles/planks should make a narrow room wider. Dark floors and light walls also make it appear bigger. Is this also to be your lounge (I'm not sure if this is being relocated)? Maybe you could also consider wood effect floor in either a rich/dark hue or ebony, if you're set on black, to offset the beech. I can't find images of the exact tiles you want but the attached should give you some idea

If you take the 290 unit off the back run and island, I think that would be sufficient? As you've got kids I think a banquette seat would be ideal for family games, homework, crafts etc. Banquettes are around 60cm, table 90cm so that leaves 113cm which I think is more than sufficient both visually and practically as it's the same gap I have behind my kitchen table. Choose chairs that push under and consider the table legs carefully depending on the number of chairs wanted, pedestal tables often work. I would however take the sink off the island and maybe install a prep sink instead so the back run would be DW, sink, bin, induction hob (I'd integrate the oven personally). Is the shower room a must? It seems quite a trek to reach there with the number of doors unless there was a way to extend the 2nd front door forward and create access from the hall there. Also wondering if you'd considered removing the wall between snug and the old kitchen? It may make the area more useable rather than trying to fill the old kitchen

I agree with OnePlan above. If you could create a door there, you would gain the extra wall space where the entry is now and you could have another look at the kitchen design. Maybe the fridge/freezer could go on that wall? If you did change the door, I would change the peninsular too because you don't want to have to walk all the way around the peninsula to get into the kitchen but just walking immediately left and left again would not be a problem. I wouldn't have an undercounter fridge and freezer that someone suggests. We have a big fridge (fridge section above freezer section) and then an undercounter fridge (in a breakfast area) for condiments and drinks. It is amazing how much one uses the "main" fridge and imo it would be a pain to use an undercounter one twenty times a day. Others may disagree, of course.

A thought might be to consider a dining area with banquet seating area diagonally opposite the kitchen. This could keep the dining area related to the kitchen and from intruding into the through way to the rear doors , and incorporate some storage -which is always useful. It could have chairs on the kitchen side and a rectangular table. A pendant light, or twin pendants, over the table would create an intimate dining area. The area nearer the double doors could then be an informal seating area.

Ok, so it looks like you have a good size lounge. I would keep the utility, remove the wall between kitchen and dining, and block up one of the entrance doors. Maybe move the kitchen to the front and replace the rear window with French doors for a nice dining area looking out to the garden.

Could even move the internal utility door to the hall.

Moving some doors and removing the kitchen-dining wall will be the least expensive option.

Keep the utility/mudroom, as it won't add much to your kitchen once opened up, and it's pefect for washing machine, heater, shoes. (Opening up the utility will only be interesting if you also move the toilet, but that will most likely leave you with awkward loadbearing wall issues and less hallway space for coat hangers due to the abundance of doors.)

NB the utility measurement in cm is incorrect.

Could you knock through downstairs toilet to under-stairs space and access from the hallway; and have entrance to open-plan kitchen dining where I’ve shown in red? Gives you a little extra wall space for cupboards in the kitchen. X

Hmmm, obviously only take that door back, as long as you had full door height! Otherwise yes, loo access would be tricky! 😂
