What to do about a high ceiling in a Victorian kitchen?

I'm about to put a new kitchen in my Victorian house. At the moment there is a huge 2ft space above the wall units and I'm wondering if I should add a line of smaller cupboards above for extra storage (which I could really do with)? Or will this emphasise the ceiling height even more and look weird? Should I consider lowering the ceiling to make it feel more homely?

You are keeping the current kitchen? Can you raise the wall units to leave a bigger gap? I actually hate the standard gap of 45cm between worktop and wall units and find it really enclosed.

I love a tall ceiling so it's about working with it and emphasising the height. Using top boxes can work on tall units but look overbalanced and looming on wall cupboards. Use LED light strips to create uplighting so that the space becomes a beautiful feature, rather than a dark space. Like it too, however - if you have a good electrician, you could ask him to install some plugs that connect to the light switch in the living room. In this way, you could have 2 floor lamps (or one floor, one table) that you'd turn on from the switch (like in hotels). If you buy some good wall lights (up-downs are the trend atm), keep the chandelier and have a couple of floor lamps, you won't need to 'infect your ceiling with acne' (an architect saying about ceiling spots) - but I'd go for it in the kitchen. The picture rail looks too high to me - it could be that it's in line with the window frame; if you plan on a big reno, you should consider lowering it or if you keep it, paint the space between the rail and ceiling in the same colour as the ceiling, not the walls. wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)

We are considering scrapping the idea of having an island with just worktops either side and wall cabinets where needed. We also thought of having the dining table in the conservatory and create a utility room and WC where the dining table is now but we really want opening living throughout and don't want to break the front room away from the rest of the space. OnePlan - Thanks for your suggestions. I love the idea of coffee and tea in a unit! Plumbing on the island and left side are very difficult due to location of drains outside. Jonathan - Thanks for your suggestions. I love the plan you made. Unfortunately due to drainage, we can't have the sink on the left side. I will definitely have to consider the quiet appliances as you suggested.

Given the sideways chimney and wide window I think this house will always feel kinda mid century or modern and so Victorian adornments probably won’t do what you are thinking. Furthermore a TV over a fireplace is uncomfortable to watch and will likely make you more aware of the ceiling height. Plus adding coving will highlight the different ceiling heights. Do you really want this house to feel Victorian (which it probably never will) or do you just want the decorating style to be fancier than your previous house? Maybe the starting point should be your existing furniture and what you have to work with..... perhaps you already have a contemporary sofa and in this house you choose to decorate the walls in warmer shades..... or use wall paper or wall panelling? Instead of a contemporary floor covering at the last house perhaps you might choose a warm hardwood for this one or something patterned such as a Herringbone woven carpet? Instead of downlighters and a ceiling pendant perhaps you might choose wall lights and walk over lights here? And given that the chimney is clearly to the right you can remove a lot of the current chimney breast replacing it with side by side TV and fireplace which means a well planned wall with electric flame effect fire (so needs no chimney and can be used year round) and TV at eye level when sitting.

We had this same issue and decided to raise the cupboards up to be at the same height as our extractor fan, which reduced the gap between the top of them and the ceiling. We then added a shelf where the usual cupboard height would have been. Made the wall feel more open and spacious and played well with the height of the ceiling without costing us a fortune in more cupboards!

Storage absolutely, You just answered your own question. It will not look odd as long as everything matches. And you can also put up trailing plants, and amazing lighting.
