Decking or patio with a low DPC - help needed!

Hi, we are re-doing our garden and would like composite decking or paving from our extension. Unfortunately the DPC is quite low already so we wouldn't be able to keep this patio or decking 150mm below the DPC, and we don't want to dig out the existing concrete - any advice on what we can do?? Thanks!

If you were doing composite decking would the substructure be able to sit on ground that was at least 150mm below the dpc? I’m thinking if you were able to leave a little bit of a gap between the decking and the brickwork (so you didn’t risk ‘standing water’ being in contact with the brick above the dpc) then you would only need to worry about ‘splashes’ of water from rainfall hitting the brickwork? And maybe try and slightly slope the decking away from the wall if possible to encourage and surface water to flow away - though I guess that depends which way you orientate the decking. There must be a solution as it seems like it would be a fairly common situation! 🤞

FWIW, I found a designer here on Houzz and followed her jobs for a while. The job I copied was a $100k job-granted I didn't have all of the built in goodies, but I still got a lot of great ideas from her . Local landscapers in my area all do the same type of boring hedges I knew I was going for tropical jungle, so I encourage you to know your style and break free from the same old thing. I can't expect you to have my taste, but I'd still tell you to hide the shed behind the greenery :) also, know what are your native plants or which can easily be adapted to your growing zone. You can better assess your sun/shade situation once you take out the trees. I really had to learn how many hours of sun I was getting in what parts of the yard before I could determine what would grow best, including grass varieties.

You can have decking butting up to ground level and level with the doors, as technically the ground level won't change and compromise the DPC. There should not be a problem with rats, unless you constantly drop food that would make it's way underneath the deck. You also have an air brick in the middle that I see, so nothing should be compromising that either. I'd consider digging more of the garden away and stepping down on to the patio level, it will look more spacious.

Looks like quite a challenge! For now I think it makes sense to keep the main patio in the middle and use this as a seating area. For other areas, as a temporary solution and to prevent weeds from growing I would perhaps treat them with glyphosate weed killer or pull up as many weeds as poss providing it’s dry weather leave for a few days to work then cover with a weed proof membrane then on top of that use bark chips. Bark chips are ideal because you can use these at a later stage for flower beds, borders and so on..plus it’s safe for kids to play on. For a grassed area I’d perhaps use the area in the left but the soil will need some work first. Rotivate the soil (churn it up) pull as many weeds out as poss, then use a soil rake to even it out and remove stones. Put some top soil on, rake again then you could either sow grass seeds or lay turf rolls, either way it would need watering daily and can’t be stepped on for a few weeks. Hope this helps:)

Thanks, it does seem there should be an easy work around, I think drainage and sloping away from house seems like best bet!

I had this drainage channel put in mine so the paving does not touch the DPC. It’s very efficient.
