Paint colour advice

Our fabulous extension is built and we’re into the last phase... now the thing keeping me awake is what colour to paint the walls. Please help!

It’s a big space 6m x 9m, with lots of natural light: 3 roof lights, 4.8m of sliding doors and a box bay window. And it’s east facing.

The kitchen will be at one end (single run of units in Farrow & Ball London Stone) with a big, beautiful island in front (Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue), all with white quartz worktops. In the middle of the room, a dining table, and down the other end a lounge area. The floor is reddy, brown walnut Karndean. White ceilings.

The only wall I am fixed on is the kitchen wall, Stiffkey Blue. What colour would you paint the other walls? I love London Stone but think I need a different griege / taupe neutral. I like strong colours best but don’t want to overpower the new room. Can anyone please help me decide! I’d really appreciate your advice and experiences...

If you live strong colours I do think it's best to just wait til your kitchen is in. Although it should be light bright, with the blue it will be dark
I love stiffkey blue but on island and wall it might be too much, again I'd wait to the kitchen is in before doing the blue.

I think if you do the wall in Stiffkey it will detract from the boldness of colour on the island. I personally wouldn’t do it.

I’d go for something like a Little Greene slaked lime pale or mid on the walls.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Sonia, those colours look lovely! I must admit I have always been a bit afraid of colour (may be due to spending years in rented flats with a sea of magnolia!) But I agree with what you say and a pop of colour may be needed for contrast with the units. Would you recommended painting the whole room in one colour? Or making more of a feature of the kitchen area? Not sure where to start/stop!

Hi Diana, Love the wallpaper. If you are not afraid of color, how about something in the dark blue like Hague blue or De Nimes both by farrow and ball. It would really make the wallpaper pop too :)

What a gorgeous room! You have lots of options here as it's such a beautifully airy and light room.. You could 'colour' drench' the whole space and this will give it a cosy vibe in a taupe colour (including mouldings and fireplace). Or you could paint the ceiling down to the dado a darker colour than the walls and this will add interest and feel atmospheric. Or go with the current finishes with a darker wall and lighter 'frosting' on the woodwork, fireplace and architrave etc. Another option would be to add in some additional texture with a woven wallpaper. It can help add depth and interest in a larger room too. Hi there! South-facing rooms are the brightest in the house, with the daylight being dominant from late morning to mid-afternoon. These spaces, like north-facing rooms, have consistent light all day, but with crisp strong shadows and beams of light so you will want to also consider desk placement in the room to ensure that you are avoiding screen glare too. A muted green or blue would both work well as a 'neutral' and the green also has the benefit of helping bring the outside in. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I’m sure ideally, we’d wait for everything to be in before painting, but we’re on builder’s schedule and I figure if we make a terrible mistake, it’s only paint and can be fixed if necessary (tho hopefully not!!).

I’m really happy to paint one wall Stiffkey Blue along the kitchen wall. I think it will balance out fine (another pic of kitchen design shows relationship between island and back wall).

My conundrum is what colour to use on the other main walls. And given it’s such a big space, will it look ok to have the wall at ‘lounge’ end in an accent colour? Don’t want it to look patchwork!

I’m thinking perhaps Jitney as main colour for the other walls, will complement London Stone cabinets the Stiffkey Blue - also looks lush with walnutty floor.

And perhaps Mouse’s Back as accent wall on ‘lounge’ to make it more cosy, for evenings.

Anyone got experience of advice of using these colours? Or any other advice? Thank you!

Hi, I would think Joa's white or Oxford stone would work well for the walls, as it's in the right tones to compliment the London stone cabinets as well as working well with the Stifkey blue. Another option maybe Skylight or Ammonite

I think you might be at risk of using too many colours and there could be a clash. Why not settle on the good neutral as a starting point? A feature wall is always the easy bit, the neutral is the glue that makes it all work and that is the one I would pin down. Mouses Back is one of my favourite colours but it is very yellowy brown in some lights and therefore needs the right neutral to be matched with it. Can you edit it down a little?

Thank you for your comments - much appreciated! Funnily enough, I was thinking Oxford Stone or Joas White as the main neutral... Was also considering Jitney. As it’s east facing, are there any neutrals I should avoid? Most advice depends on when room will be used, but it will be most of the time for us - morning for bright breakfasts but also cosy evenings... thanks for any further advice / experiences.

Wow what a lovely well planned out space, can I ask a question please? your roof lights look great, now looking at them for a similar project, which manufacturer did you use and what size did you go for? Kind regards Tamara

Thanks Tamara. The roof lights are from a company called National Dome Company. They do trade supply of products called Astroglaze and Mardome among others. They can supply any size. We have gone for 1m x 3.6m as single pane. V reasonable price. How they are actually going to be fitted is subject of discussion with our builder, but hopefully all will be well! Good luck with your project!

Thank you, I have contacted them and they are going going email me some prices, think we have been advised to have builders upstand ! We are thinking of having 1.5 x 2m 3 across our dinning room space, it's tricky to decide, I am sure whatever we have will look lovely. Thanks for your time. Tamara
