Hi Maggie, You'll need to key them lightly (just rub with sandpaper to rough up the surface), then prime, undercoat and then likely 2 coats topcoat due to covering a dark colour. I used 'dulux brilliant white once satinwood' paint which goes on beautifully with a brush without leaving strokes and because it's thick you probably will get away with 1 coat (and is why its called 'once' paint). Its oil-based though so you need white spirit to clean the brushes after.

I have very similar doors in my 1934 house. Upstairs they are all painted white, but downstairs I had the sitting room one dipped, then varnished it. By the way, the colour was much the same before varnishing. I keep dithering whether to paint my sitting room one or not, so it remains au natural for now. Decisions, decisions!
