Hi Firstly I love the light over the table it's fab! I do think the lighting needs layering up a little and I would probably introduce a lamp on the work surface in the kitchen and possibly add some lovely lanterns on the breakfast bar with candles. Also, could you buy some temporary under cupboard lights and pop them under your breakfast bar? I know it may not be as good as integrated lighting but it may also enhance the ambience of your kitchen/dining room. Another option could be to place a thin console table running along the wall and have a couple of small lamps there?

THEN FURNISH IT WITH THINGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL HAPPY. DON'T WORRY ABOUT FASHIONS AS THEY FADE. JUST LIVE IN THE SPACE FOR A WHILE AND SETTLE IN. AFTER A WHILE YOUR INSTINCTS WILL GUIDE YOU AS TO WHAT COLOUR WILL SUIT YOU AND HOW YOU LIVE. READ UP ABOUT HOW COLOUR AND LIGHT AFFECT MOOD. AS A GENERAL RULE IF I GO WITH WHITE WALLS THEN I MAKE THE FURNISHINGS DARK OR BRIGHT. IF I GO DARK ON THE WALLS THEN I MAKE THE FURNITURE LIGHTER WITH COLOUR POPS ON THE ACCESSORIES. A GOOD IDEA WOULD BE TO LOOK ON RIGHTMOVE LONDON, THEN LOOK AT WHAT YOU LIKE AND WHAT YOU HATE. Hi Anna. If you were to choose any of the wall colours I suggested you wouldn't need to change the curtains. I tried finding pics with pale gold curtains for you to visualise. If you don't want a dark scheme (and not everyone does!) then you can really choose any colour you like. If you kept the wall colour though I might add a little colour for curtains and accessories rather than something neutral.

That little table looks very cottagey attractive as it is and the chairs go well. I can imagine you would like to have something more modern for a new apartment. The colouring below would work well in your room and if the table is not too large (as this one is) it could be pushed against a wall for most of the time. It is difficult to tell what happens in the room. In the future you might have a larger dining area where you can have a modern table, but that little round table will always find a place; maybe displaying family photographs; a base for a lamp and large bowl of flowers; maybe in a bedroom for displays or having a decorative, or heavy linen to-the-floor tablecloth with jute trim. If you paint it, don't make it brown, as it will look like an apology. You could pluck out the deep red lacquer from your rug, or go with a mid-to-deep French grey-blue.
