How would you dress this recessed patio door (with window)?

Hi!

First time poster and home-buyer, so apologies if there's an etiquette.

I'm due to complete on my first house at the end of the month, so currently thinking about interiors. The ground floor of my new terraced town-house is open plan, with a recessed patio door (with a small window to the right side) and a small recessed window.

I'm stuck for ideas about how to dress the patio door and window, and struggling to find much inspiration online.

Here is the dilemma:

The door recess is approx 28cm. Inner measurements for the door recess are H 209 x W 138. The width of the full wall is 460cm.

Currently I'm thinking a simple voile on a track might be best here, with a patterned roman blind for the window - with a fabric print that I can match or repeat through the living/dining room.

For completeness, here's the view looking toward the kitchen.

I’d definitely stick with a Roman blind for the window. As it’s quite a small window, I’d hang the blind outside of the window recess (a good 6inches above) so that the blind doesn’t block too much daylight when up. You could have a matching curtain, with a pole outside the recess and line up the top of the curtain with the top of the blind. I’d prob just stick with one curtain to pull back to the right across the window as you have light switches on the other side. Eyelet curtains would stack back quite nicely without too much fullness in the way of the window or door.
Alternatively, you could just have a track inside the recess for curtains but it might look strange if the blind isn’t also recessed.

I have a similar set up in my kitchen. Small window has a Roman blind and my patio doors have simple eyelet curtains. Here’s some pics but they haven’t come out too well!

Think if you need heavier curtains for winter I would have them on the inside wall, pushed right back so they don't encroach on the window at all (sort of hung to the side) and in the same tone as the wall so they blend in. Personally I would let them look in as it's a lovely window...failing that maybe hang a sheer on the lower window so you can still get light and the shape at the top??

Hi Dawn, Love your new kitchen! We offer a system called PerfectFit, which allows blinds to sit inside the uPVC frames of windows or patio doors. They clip in neatly, without the need for drilling, and then become an integral part of the window, which means they won't flap about in the window. inside id have an LED strip light over the door to light up the door way on a night. Outside id have two planters either side of the arch, have trellis and get a few climbing plants, eventually guide these to grow over the arch, it'll take a while just depends on what climbing plant you'd use.

Hi there, I can see that you have beautiful yet challenging windows with the added issue of radiators underneath which I assume you’d prefer not to cover with lined curtains? Because of not having any recess to speak of roller blinds are not ideal. You might get away with voile pleated blinds since their cassette is more discreet. Romans fitted just under the coving on extension brackets would clear the architrave around the window but there would be considerable light bleed around the edges as a result. I’m wondering whether shutters might be the day / night solution you need? It would be quite tight on the right hand window as it’s so close to the wall, but it might be worth getting a shutter company in to explore this if that idea appealed.

Hi. It all depends on your preferences and the style you are after. Curtains create more traditional look and are more versatile in textures, colours, patterns, fabrics and styles. Blinds are for more modern look usually. For more ideas have a look here -

Hi Piers, welcome! How about a double (ceiling mounted) track which goes the width of the room with both voiles and thicker fabric curtain, both can ‘stack’ on the right hand wall away from both the door and window. During the day for privacy you can use the voile and during colder months and at night the fabric curtain. Blinds2Go/Curtains2Go are not very expensive and do some lovely wave curtains (amongst others); I’ve always been really happy with the quality of their products. If you get a corded track you can even electrify the curtains with a gadget you can connect to your smartphone (can’t remember what its called right now, sorry!) and add schedules so they open/close at a certain time of day!
