Need help with exterior of house

Hi All,

We are converting our bungalow to a house and need help deciding what should we do about exterior. Its a brick bungalow currently. Our architect suggested that we go for rendering on the new first floor that will be build using blockwork. Please see below the current bungalow picture and the proposed exterior. We find half brick and half rendering a bit old style. We would love some ideas from you all to visualize what are our options and what might look modern.

For a more modern look just render both floors.

I would reconsider the roof. When building a roof from scratch you are at a huge advantage when future proofing your home. I would consider eliminating some of those pitches and replacing with gables (which I think look nicer anyway).

Also when building the roof structure remove any trusses and supported purlins from the design and make sure the joists are strong enough to create a floor.

If you do all this you will have a useable loft space that can be used as a hobby room/ storage and then later if you need an extra bedroom or want to increase the value of your home before selling you can easily and very cost effectively do a loft conversion.

If anyone happens to read this thread, I have actually started to repaint the Mole's Breath with Downpipe, which I much prefer. The Moles Breath, in certain light, took on a brownish hue which I didn't like. It hasn't weathered that well, but this side of the house is quite exposed to the elements so we knew we would need to re do on a regular basis. Downpipe is more of a definite grey I think. Still unsure of what to do with the windows, if any designers out there would like to suggest a frame colour that would go well with F & B Downpipe? Husband painted one of the frames early summer with Zinsser primer and two topcoats, just white for now, and so far it is weathering well. We also need to change the exterior lights if anyone has any good suggestions? The door will be replaced too. Just haven't got around to it yet! I'm comfortable with interior design but the exterior is bugging me and our budget is limited for now.

If you are going to use white for the window frames I suggest you install the shutters before you make your final decision on colour as glass distorts the colour slightly and most shutters are a soft white. If you put a brilliant white on the woodwork the shutters could look like they have yellowed.

I think you need to weigh up if there is a profit benefit by building a front gable. You might well increase the square footage by 10% which could be enough to add value particularly if it gives you enough room for an extra room like an ensuite. It may be worth consulting an estate agent to get an opinion- where I live there are some roads where improving the kerb appeal and square footage would easily add more than the cost of improvements

Hi Sarah - I hate to say it, but I don't think just taking the tiles off and infilling with matching brick is going to "take it out of the 60s" - it will take a bit more than that to radically change the appearance. Something like a timber cladding could radically change the look, A fab example is in the photos below (not by us, but a fellow architecture practice). This renovation utterly transformed from the original - but something like this would obviously require planning permission which you say you are reluctant to do. (Depending on your area, you may require planning permission in any case to change the exterior materials).
