What is this plant growing in my olive tree pot?

I have a small olive tree (Olea Europaea) growing in a pot. It has been living in my greenhouse (NW England) for two years, along with a load of carnivorous plants, mostly Drosera and Sarracenia. I sometimes get small little shoots growing the carnie pots, and have been told that these are probably Utricularia. They are always a single stalk, a couple of inches tall, with a very small yellow flower on top. Don't have any at the moment, so can't include a photo.

I now have something growing in the soil with my olive tree, which bears some vague resemblance to the Utricularia, but is much more bushy, with much larger shoots...

I've never seen anything like this in my greenhouse before. It wasn't there when I got the tree, and only seems to have grown this year.

Anyone any idea what it is? I rather like it, and would be quite happy to get some growing in its own pot if that's possible.

I don’t know the name but it’s a weed that likes to seed itself in pots. Best to remove it.

Hi, yes you can. You could even untie it from the support thingy and re-arrange it how you want it up the pole. It will look rather awkward for a bit but it will adjust. Better to keep the leaves facing outwards. Careful not to over water. Feel the compost, if it’s dry then water. If soil is damp don’t water - more plants are killed by overwatering than under. For a small/London/town garden I would highly recommend exploring sorbus. Regardless of whether the look is modern or naturalistic. Vilmorinii is my favourite. Hupehensis is similar. Pink pagoda or pink charm have brighter pink berries, but I prefer the charm of the standard species with light pink fading to white. Cashmiriana is lovely with white berries. Prattii is great for multi stem.

Hi. Mmmmm.... the examples you posted are specifically pruned to that shape and need to be kept pruned regularly. I call them lollipop trees😊. Most trees don’t usually grow to a set height then stop, unless trimmed they just keep on growing. Containers will need to be big as they need a good amount of root space and will conserve water better. I think you’ll find the containers more expensive than the trees/ shrubs themselves. This site has some good examples of ‘lollipop’ trees: https://www.paramountplants.co.uk/clear-stem-trees.html Not sure if any of them flower. There are lots of plants you could use for a specific planting scheme. A local garden nursery should be able to help with what would be suitable for your area.

Nice pots. Aldi are selling these atm which I think would be perfect. https://www.aldi.co.uk/the-green-garden-buxus-pyramid/p/706736416109300 Very easy to look after and should do well for a good few years. There are not a lot of plants that are happy in a pot long term but there are a few. If you want some flowers then my favourite is pot mums. They’re Chrysanthemums but the outdoor bedding variety (I recently bought some more from Asda.) Lots of colours, will be happy in a pot for years and flower when a lot of stuff is gone over. Tip for any potted plant is to scrape top layer of soil off in spring and replenish with fresh compost, it gives them an oomph 🙂, then water a lot during spring and summer months.

Shame, it's quite an attractive weed! Still quite tempted to keep it. Right now it's on my living room windowsill, so it's not going to cause problems for anything else, and I can keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't affect the olive tree.

Any idea why it only appeared in this one pot? There are loads of pots in my greenhouse, and I haven't seen anything like this in any others. My experience of weeds is that they normally take over. The Utricularia that is in the carnivorous plant pots has spread to pretty much every pot in there, as have the various Drosera species I keep (often thought of as the weeds of the carnivorous plant world, although most of us like them).
