Hello, I'm looking for some ideas on what kind of banister or breakfast bar I can put around the stairs in my kitchen.

My wife used to restore furniture. She reliably informs me, that the wood is Oak. If she were finishing that to order, to look the same, she would use antique pine Bri-wax for that finish and colour. If you want it washable / wipeable for a kitchen a similar effect could be achieved with a medium oak SATIN varnish. Try one coat to see if the colour is rich enough, if it is, put a clear coat on top. If not, put another coat of medium oak on. Two coats should suffice. Ronseal Satin Medium Oak Varnish. You are going to be better off with a wide plank reclaimed timber than a new bit. However, it is possible to make it look old. The 'Live edge' as you call it isn't actually bark it's just rough cut and then been given a 'chopped' look. Also, not that difficult with a couple of good sanders and an axe. However, She ' the wife', was ( is ) particularly talented in that direction. She assures me, that it's easy !! Apparently the hard part is sourcing the right timber. It needs to be reclaimed for maximum effect, it also needs to be 'Wide plank' as two timbers joined together down the middle won't look right. We've made tables to order with tops similar.

Idea's needed how to fix a wooden breakfast bar to a granite worktop

I recall this being asked before. Was a post last week too. Our suppliers tell us to glue it. The problem may be allowing for timber movement as it is a naturally hydroscopic material when fixing to the granite. I'm sure I recall many months ago reading to ask the granite supplier to drill holes through the granite. As I see it the options are drilling/screwing or glueing.

If you just want a prep surface and overhang for stools with some open storage then a wooden topped kitchen or dining table, raised up with something like newel posts or similar to work bench height with a shelf inserted between is very effective. If you require a deeper overhang (I believe overhangs larger than 15cm might need bracketing and the tabletop secured well to prevent tipping) then you could place an additional work top over it. You could paint the feet, legs and shelf to match your perimeter units or as an accent colour. Maybe a little on the rustic side but I have seen it with a back gloss kitchen with pine top and cream legs and shelf and it looks good, warming up the black.

Ooo! patio doors? If it's movable you could use it as outdoor breakfast bar too. Personally I'm not a fan of peninsulas, but yes legs will give it less visual weight. If it was me (again personal preference) I would have a temporary workspace i.e. something that extends out when needed but opens up the kitchen when not in use.... In your kitchen this could be done by adding an extra unit with extending part where Nellie's bed is currently. The way I see it is if you go for a minimal open design, as you have, will a peninsula clutter it all up and close it all off? Will it make the kitchen feel smaller? If you are cooking, will you feel cut off from the rest of the area and lose the connection to the garden?

I don’t understand what you mean by breakfast bar. Surely you need to continue it as part of the staircase?

Thank you Sarah. Glass is definitely a front runner but pricy so trying to think of alternatives. I'll probably end up going with glass though
