"temporary" hallway flooring, before I lay the posh stuff?

I have my eye on one of the new Amtico 'Victorian tiles look' hallway floors in the Decor range. Some examples here:

The big however is that I need to get my kitchen redone. The kitchen is through the hallway - there's no other access as I live in a terraced house. But I don't want to lay a pricy floor which is then going to be damaged by kitchen builders' workboots (however carefully I put protective covering over the Amtico when the time comes).

Does anyone have any ideas for cheaper 'temporary' hallway flooring I could lay for a year or so, then take up when the kitchen works start. (Obviously this is a bit wasteful, but I am just considering all the options at the moment). Thanks so much.

I don’t blame you. In our last house our hall floor never recovered properly even though it was covered (the bathroom was meant to be done before the wood floor!).

You can pick up sheet vinyl very cheaply or just consider a cheap rug/runner to cover the existing? Maybe an indoor/outdoor one which you could hopefully reuse?

The decor tiles are lovely but very expensive so understand your concern.
Karndean also do similar.

I agree with Minnie a sheet vinyl would be relatively inexpensive if you need to cover existing floor.
Just be careful how you fit it so that when you uplift, the subfloor doesn’t get left with the backing of the vinyl stuck to it. It’s not a big deal but it would then need to be scrapped and prepared as you want the floor as smooth as possible to receive the decor.

Well, still nothing to report, and we are absolutely no further forward on deciding the paint colours. Last night I went into Homebase after work yet again for a couple more testers - put them up, nahhhhh. This hallway has been a complete nightmare from start to finish and I wish that we'd left it well alone. I suppose in the long-run it'll be worth it, but I'm finding it really hard to muster up any enthusiasm on it now - it's been dragging on for months. @OnePlan: Yeah, I would consider laying the stair runner myself for sure, it's not the laying that was the issue, it was the fact it'd been cut wrong that's the problem, and it looked stupid. However, at the moment, the sooner this room is done the better, I just want to see the back of it, so as the carpet place do the service, I'll happily pay a professional to do it in an afternoon, rather than me spending any more time on it. Also, I have a terrible terrible habit of injuring myself whenever I come into contact with Carpet Grippers. No matter how long or short, removing them from the floor, moving them from the floor to the rubbish container, or even from the rubbish container into the dustbin - my hands always look like I've been attacked with a cheese grater. Seriously, I am 100% certain, that at some point in time when carpet grippers are involved I will need a plaster! @Carolina: Oh don't you worry about that, I've got some scrap paper and a head-full of ideas. Another project is forthcoming (may start this weekend actually) involving an area to the side of our house currently used for dumping things (1m.80 across the back and 2m.24 to the front) Separate thread incoming :)

Theyre UPVC, expensive convincing anyone to knock walls out in this place. Not fitted very well so had to go build up exterior render to look right, and it showed up how NOT square the left of the window recess was so had to build that out/ plaster too! It's more to make it homely/soft that I want curtaining, and it's only exposed between the neighbours back yards /our house because the new border was only planted this year and the end result evergreen privacy hasnt had chance to thrive yet... more planting in the spring. It is "the dark side" of the house so want to let light in. End game plan is there will be no ceiling and the area will be lit my velux roof window... but that's a LONG way off! The trick is to try keeping it nice and liveable in the meantime, it means more expense but rather that then totally lose my sanity! Here is how is WAS out back... and a photo from earlier this year. The purpose of the door is to bring this area into use, not the forgotten inaccessible area it once was. The half wall, it is the intention to have a surface behind that under the stairs, it doesnt have to stay in the end, but it's unbelievable how much use that little wall gets. It's in the "walkway" at the back of the lounge, and right across from the tv. It will just serve as bit of separation between under the stairs and the walkway/lounge.

Thanks both. MATM - would a wc definately not fit in if we put a smaller shower bath under the window though? Ie a 1400 one? And the sink and wc across the back wall? If not then I will just put the shower bath in as per your plan. No other wc in the house unfortunately and I can't see anywhere else I could put one. There are add ons to the sides of the house ie like storage rooms that are within the house structure, but to bring these up to building regs and knock through would be costly. Plus they are off the kitchen where the cooker is I will get a plumber around though and see if they have any ideas as it depends where the drains are.

Crikey… so much repetition! We called cushion vinyl as an option, right at the very start of your thread, L Ray. Poor you having to read so much repeat. Cushion vinyl (cv) sometimes gets confused with "lino". True lino is linoleum - look it up here. It's a natural product which is fab but being resilient it's a little hard and cold, perhaps, for most peoples bedrooms AND it is quite expensive and likely to blow your budget. CV, as we previously mentioned, is a genuine option. Good manufacturers make it authentic looking, as "rinq" previously vouched for. We gave you some links in our first post of the UK's biggest supplier of cv. A Belgium manufacturer called IVC. For more info click here. We supply all their products so we'd suggest you carry out a little online research of their collections (Leoline and Avenue) Polyflor should be considered for their well priced and authentic looking luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). You may find their products fit within your budget. Click here for some ideas. However, without doubt, if you are looking for wood style flooring, the cheapest/entry level products will be cushion vinyl. Oh, as per "forzaitalia", you will need a little sub-floor preparation for those floor boards. You may be able to get away with hardboarding them rather than ply. Hardboard is cheaper and is acceptable when using in conjunction with CV. Just depends on how good/bad your floorboards are. Hope this helps you a bit more, L Ray.

We laid a wood effect vinyl tile in the hallway and downstairs wc as a temporary solution...

Problem is it looked great so it's just ended up staying!

Personally I would get the kitchen done first, then do the floor afterwards. Waste of money otherwise.

Thanks everyone. Very helpful thoughts. This has given me some good ideas to go to the flooring shop with. Yes @Sonia you are of course right - in an ideal world the kitchen should really be done first. But for various reasons we can't proceed in that order, unfortunately. There are some other parts of the house - structural and decorative - which include the hallway, that need to be dealt with as more of a priority. So therefore the question is - what *can* we do to temporarily deal with the hallway flooring, using the next-best, most cost-effective and least wasteful option. Hence the thread, you see :)

@Jules Mc On the hallway floor at the moment - some tatty 1990s pale blond plasticky laminate that the previous owner of the house left. It has to come up to do some electrics underneath and once up I do not think it will go back down (and anyway it's way past time for that laminate to be retired). Yes it would be an option to paint the boards, although once the laminate is up I would have a slightly treacherous 'lip' to trip over into the front room, where there is parquet. The other factor is that messy family members in muddy boots tromp through the hall. However, a runner on dark boards would look temporarily great. On the basis of this thread I am going to investigate both vinyl and runner.
