Carpet to go with Farrow and Ball Skimming Stone

Hello, After much thought I finally settled on skimming stone for my hallway and stairs. I love it because it is such a subtle warmish grey but this makes me unsure what colours would complment it although I know I would like something with neutralish tones. I have a wooden floor in the entrance hallway but would like carpet for stairs and two upper floor hallways. I have celing, woodwork and bannisters in white. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would go with a biege biscuity carpet on the stairs with white on the woodwork, a rattan pendant lamp and a long Persian style hall way runner

I have ordered the first one for stairs and landing and have the second one in bedrooms. Both suit SKim ing Stone, which is on my walls. In reality there is more of a contrast between the different carpets than the pics show.

Hi, I was just looking at staircases for a project I am working on and came across the images of your hall and your post. I have read all the good comments but could not resist ... throwing a couple of things into the mix that you could consider (budget permitting) ... Oak Parquet flooring is lovely but sometimes the yellow tones often highlighted with sunlight and age affects the choices we make for the walls and banisters and we fancy a change. Replacing the floor would be expensive, however, a relatively cheap and easy option would be to employ a flooring company to sand your existing wood floors. They basically sand them back and then you can choose from a huge number of tones of wood that you would like them to stain/oil/varnish the floor. (It took my guys a couple of days to complete). With the floor in the tone you love... you can then look at the walls and banisters etc. I would recommend painting your current wood banisters that would offer a new look. You could paint the spindles and varnish/paint the banister in another colour i.e. black etc. I would potentially suggest painting the spindles in the same colour as the ceilings. In the F and B colour palette, they use strong white alongside Elephants breath, skimming stone and Dove Tail. I would paint the spindles/stair woodwork Strong White (estate eggshell) and the ceilings Strong White (matt emulsion). I would use the wallpaper you love on the ground floor in between all the doors for maximum effect and a cohesive look. Wallpaper would not take as much traffic on the ground floor walls as it would on the stairwell and could look fabulous. You would then paint the skirting boards , and door architraves in elephants breath, skimming stone , dove tail etc. (Modern Emulsion) Finally, the stair wall (opposite banisters) could either be painted in the same colour as the architrave/skirtings, or a complimentary colour from the palette (either Elephants breath, skimming stone, elephants breath etc.) (Modern Emulsion) Both options would look great. Modern Emulsion is good to use on the stair wall as you can easily wipe it down. Good luck with your refurb. :-)

Try Dulux Egyptian Cotton (looked very similar when I had testers for my kitchen) or I've heard Dulux Just Walnut is similar too. Otherwise get a Dulux or Valspar colour match at their mixing stations - just paint a piece of paper with a F&B tester pot.

I find that the only way is to use tester pots. It's expensive and infuriating , i know. Cost me a small fortune trying to get the right colour! I have found that colours look completely different on opposing sides of my house because of the light and have had to go darker/lighter in different rooms just to get the same effect... The neutral I keep going back to in this house is F&B Ammonite as it works with the light and I want a grey scheme that isn't too cold. Skimming Stone is a lovely neutral that is more taupe-ish, but appears grey in some lights (also used it in my hall with little light... seems to be a theme :) )... I'm no pro at all, but speaking from experience... It depends what feel you want in your home.

Yep there is. Little Greene have just bought out a new colour card and small brochure called Stone. This is because (bear with me on this), I'm not a slave to fashion. quite the opposite, but I predict that in a couple of years time, we will look back on the battleship grey phase in the same way we look back on the avocado bathroom suite phase. Greys are beautiful if they are nuanced and have a tinge of colour, but grey all over just because it's fashionable is not a good fit for many interiors, particularly light starved ones. The new range for Little Greene is brilliant because it appears to present them in terms of perceived temperature first. It suggests a colour, then gives related whites, neutrals, coordinating and contrasting colours. In terms of 'whites' I would never use pure white on a trim or skirting, rather I would use a related white. For example, for a pinky hued taupe colour, such as Oxford Stone, which can look warm and slightly pink, a pure white would look cold next to it, but a related white would look harmonious. If everything is painted in related colours then it can look like a 'White' room on a sunny afternoon, if that makes sense. My personal preference for neutrals is red based ones because I find yellow based ones can look a bit dirty in light starved spaces, and can look a bit bleak with LED lights which do no favours fo any colours. Hope this has not made things worse.

Thankyou clarekelly 2002 and macbroom. I've just ordered a sample of the castle grey. Like that it's not a flat colour. What I love about skimming stone is it looks different at different times of day. Also my hall has very bright sunny areas and darker areas and that makes it look different too. I think that maybe carpet with multi tones might suit better?

The Castle Grey is 100% wool (quite pricey too). The other one is a more lustrous finish but isn't a flat colour either - it's not really possible to tell that from the pic though. The Riviera range is gorgeous. I must've borrowed every sample from the local store before deciding on the Castle Grey. It's quite slim so suitable for stairs as opposed to the chunkier carpets, which would have made the stair treads look bulbous. Good luck with your decision :)

I had stone coloured wardrobes and I just brought the colour sample with me on my carpet hunt until I found a good match. Luckily we have a brilliant family run flooring shop and I spent hours in there! You could paint a piece of card and bring that with you?

macbroom. I guessed it was pricey when a local supplier had it listed as POA. I'm sure it will look super on your stairs. I am just at the browsing stage so appreciate all tips. Sonia I still have a large piece of lining paper that I painted with my test pot of skimming stone so will cut off a bit and take it with me when I get to the shopping stage.
