Bath surround predicament

Would appreciate any advice on what to do if you can't afford a bath surround - or if there are any affordable options! We are starting a bathroom from scratch (it literally has no floors at the moment which is sometimes an advantage as we are having a wet room installed). I hate the idea of tiling around the bath (at the top) as I think it looks messy and weird. It will be not be our main bathroom (which I am planning to have freestanding bath) but I am just after a nice classic finish and love a bath surround. No one can give me any details of how much this will cost and am now thinking of going freestanding bath just to avoid these issues..

What do you mean by a bath surround? Do you mean a panel?

Hi Sonia, I mean the bath countertop (I think they are called bath surrounds) they are normally some form of stone but I believe you can get these manufactured too.

You can use side panels or a deck/surround to create what is, in effect, a free standing bath that would work well aesthetically and, optionally, as part of a wetroom-style bathroom. Deep soaking tubs are especially effective for such projects; they have smaller footprint, which affords more room in the shower area, but their greater depth makes them exceptionally comfortable.

Hi, Need a bit more info; Is it a traditional bath or modern? Have you got a picture/link? Do you want a hand shower by the bath for cleaning and use in bath? Is the bath surrounded by stud walls or does it have to be floor standing? What is your budget? Vado you can be looking at £600+, Hansgrohe £1800+ but you can get discounts. Cheaper, unsufficiently supported floor taps are wobbly so I'd really avoid. Sounds more like a modern tub bath to me - would be great to see pictures :)

Have you bought the bath? I think a bath that has a countertop as you describe is known as an inset bath. If you Google that, I’m sure you will find options. However - the majority of baths are not inset baths. A normal bath doesn’t require a top section and the side panel (separate panel or tiles) are just on the side and stop at the top where it meets the bath.
