Can anyone identify this wood? Should I sand it?

I lifted the ground floor carpets in my 1902 house and found these gorgeous floors complete with original hearth.

I want to restore but I’ve been told not to sand it as that would remove the colour.

Any idea what wood this is and should I just clean and wax?

I'm no expert but it looks like stained pine to me. Anywhere you could discretely chip off a bit of the top layer to see the original colour?

Most floorboards are pine.

Thanks Jill. Sorry to be confusing. As you come through the front door it has 2 x glass panels. The inner porch door has a glass panel. I would like the wood to run the length of the first part of the hall, the dining room to the right would also run in the same direction. However, after the first part of the hall, you then turn left into the second part of the hall where again I want it laid along its length. It's how the wood joins up with an expansion joint (see sketch of what I think the fitter means to do) that I'm just not sure will look right? Could do with seeing some pics of anyone who has had a floor laid this way. Thanks

Sorry, mad week. If you haven't already sussed this then a couple of options to try are: apply a coat of chalk paint and wipe with a damp cloth before it's totally dry, lightly sand and seal. Can obviously play around until get strength (or not) of colour you want. Or you can dilute chalk paint and apply in thin layers leaving to dry (20 mins or so) between coats until right level of white achieved. A tester pot should be enough for either of these. Another option is to use a lime wax which does the same thing but the finish (wax!) is 'built in' so need to let completely dry before using Matt varnish. Have fun

Hi, For some reason, my answer was cut off before I'd finished it! Sorry, You have some interesting questions. Personally, unless you have experience of floor sanding, I think that it's best left to the professionals. Whilst you can hire exactly the same sanders that they use, it is very easy to damage a floor by pausing too much when changing direction and creating a dip in the floor with the large belt sander. The edging sanders are pretty easy to use, the problem is that it will take an absolute age to sand a floor with them. Normal smaller or DIY type sanders simply won't create the same quality of finish and you will be there for ever trying to do a whole floor. Hiring professionals to sand the floor shouldn't be particularly expensive and will certainly be cheaper than replacing any damage that you do to the floor trying it yourself. Hi Edwina, Im probably a bit anal / perfectionist and yes I can see the scratches and greyer toned board... if this was a brand new hardwood floor I would be deeply unhappy but in your case I would embrace them and agree with JC these 'features' add to the wonderful character of your period property ...there will be many more to come with memories made over the years. Your floor is a beautiful, traditional pine floor - a softwood and therefore will dent / scratch easily. Without being up close it is hard to see whether the scratches are on the surface finish or within the floorboard...my guess is that they are ingrained into the floorboard rather than the surface finish. You will drive yourself mad trying to keep your pine floor completely dent / mark free . We have clients requesting distressed / aged / antiqued / worm-holed surfaces to new timber floors and have to try and recreate them lol .We also have clients specifying a pine engineered floor in office spaces which will be dented within a day due to the softness of the timber. That said to prolong the surface finish...do not wear stilletos on this floor - you will see every heel mark , do put felt pads under your furniture and install a large coir mat (inset if possible) at external entrrances to force feet wiping & trap dirt and grit.
