The best oil to use for a solid oak desk top?

Best wood oil for a solid oak desktop. Also curious whether wood oils can range in smoothness, as I'd probably be writing on my desk with pencils and paper etc. Also looking for something that would meanid only oil it once. Thanks in advance

Wood oil is something you’d need to upkeep I’m afraid. It’s not a finish you can apply once and forget about, it’s just not that hardwearing. An annual refinish should be fine.

The upside to oil is that you don’t have to strip off old oil before you refinish, which you’d have to do if you used varnish or polyurethane finishes.

Hi Oak and Broad! That's just it, it didn't say what brand only that it was brushed natural oiled finish. The Pamphlet states special cleaning with intensive wood cleaner and to use Maintenance Oil (natural or white) the white apparently gives a limed appearance. The Manufacture of the wood is Natures Own European Oak. It doesn't look as though it is brushed either, it looks dipped in possibly a wax oil the finish as it is oiled back and front and there are certain parts in the wood that does not look to be oiled especially in some knots. Which is why I don't really want to leave it especially a whole year before re-oiling. I have enclosed a couple of pics but I really don't know what information you will be able to see apart from its a dull finish Thank you for any guidance you can give. As you can see it's still a work in progress and the skirtings and kick-boards need to go on to cover the expansion gaps surrounding the walls and appliance cubbys

I love wood counter top's even though they are more work than laminate. There are a number of things you can do to help make life easier in the long run though: The blackening around the sink is a common issue but can be resolved by getting a deep under-mounted sink which means water won't sit and pool for long periods of time. http://homefixated.flashpointstudio.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/3043998820-L.jpg http://www.iichekanpur.org/charming-butcher-block-countertops-for-kitchen-furniture-inspiration/wood-butcher-block-countertops-with-white-sink-and-cabinet-for-kitchen-decor-ideas-2/ Use mineral oil every day for 2-3 days when the worktops are new until the wood stops absorbing it. The use a natural mix of organic beeswax and mineral oil - reapplying every couple of months. This will form a food save protective layer that will keep them looking good. You'll see if you put a drop of water on the top it'll simply bead rather than soaking in. Yes Daisy they are not comfortable and we tend to be lounge dwellers lol but I do like a table when I have guests or sunday lunch around a table so nice for get together. I work with lots of young dogs and puppies and my last german shepherd (sadly now passed) had a thing about testing my new tables and chairs just nibbling them around the edges so this was a bit of a solution with metal finish to that issue as we had him for 15years!! lol. But to be honest has worked out extremely well especially for hot things. I have considered Having top recovered in solid surface as I like its shape and size and I do use it as a workstation too and bentwood chairs soooo love this style of iconic chair around a mismatched table and love natural woods thats why I kept the upper cabinets that are solid med.oak and beautifully made just replaced one or two facia panels on the wall units to tie in with my new base units in a matt sage/grey finish thats so easy to keep clean. Going to replace facia on plate rack on far wall next to link it in more sort of evolving this kitchen make over used a great replacement door company in Stoke. If I do replace whole lot table and chairs will then make a charming little set for the garden so I cant complain about this buy as purchased half price In late summer sale nice when things are useful. I do like the slightly industrial timber plank tables too with metal legs and rustic tops

I use Osmo Top Oil on my Oak worktop. It gives a lovely silky finish. I also tried it on an old pine sideboard and that came up really well. Apply it the night before and it will be dry by the morning. I do mine every 6 months. It only takes a few minutes.

I used osmo white and then osmo clear on my office oak.

We use Osmo on black American walnut and it is so easy to use.
