latching a porthole window

I have a wooden sash porthole window that has been locked closed and sealed with paint and caulk etc. I want to open it as it is in a cloakroom and the ventilation will be nice to have. Any suggestions for porthole window latches once I have managed to free it up and get it open?

A top hopper latch is what you need. That will clip it to, but it depends on whether it’s intended to be opened. If not it will need some conversion to do it.

Love the glass corner idea - much more inviting than those walls ! ...personally, as a fellow countryside dweller, my opinion would be that this would be perfect size for a simple bench and boot and coat racks - to keep all the wellies and any horse /dog/mud clobber etc out of the house ! But if this is your main entrance and if you don't have all the muddy stuff we seem to have, then maybe a slightly neater porch with wood store might be better - I'd simply have the half walls removed to achieve this ?!? Its a good idea to consider the house and the immediate exterior space as a whole and also to consider what the medium to long term plan will be in order to avoid the finished project becoming too disjointed. A lot depends on your budget, but smartening up the exterior facade, improving the entrance and side area and also considering how you want to use the space inside and out should all come into the equation. Also spend some time observing how the natural light moves around the house.

Hi Daniel, Try Storm Windows - they specialise in secondary glazing and working with historic and listed buildings, and have done a number of national trust properties. Depending on your budget, it might be worthwhile only focusing on the principle habitable rooms to start with. You could try plastic film on other windows - I recall that this is self adhesive and sometimes uses a vacuum to suck air out to form airtight seal. One final option is to look at a system called Magnaglaze which adheres thin acrylic sheets to the window frame via magnetic strips. All of which is reversible so should not have LB implications. However, the first suggestion (Storm) will have best acoustic and thermal properties, so I'd start there! Good luck with it all, K

I've just had timber double glazed sashes put in. They don't open as fully as original victorian ones, which open from the top, the bottom or both. I had to choose either top opening or bottom opening. I chose bottom, which is apparently unusual but my windows are huge, over 6' high, and i wanted to be able to access the opening. they came with brass stops fitted which unless you unscrew them prevent the window opening more than a couple of inches. I get this for security but it's a bit of a faff if you just want to fling open windows to air a room. The other thing I had to choose was the split of top to bottom, on terms of the size of the panes. to do this I looked for original windows on my street to copy. because I couldn't find any I accepted 60/40 split. Then once it was too late found some originals, which were 50/50. it doesn't really matter because 99% of houses on my street have upvc anyway and they're all different but I wish I'd gone with my instinct to have 50/50. my only other advice is to go with a local timber window specialist with a good website and no hard sell tactics. And once they've sent you their written quote, challenge it. There's always room for negotiation. I just emailed back and asked 'is that the very best you can do?' . The quote was immediately reduced from 12k to 9.5k. Blackthorn Timber Windows BTW, if you are in the North East or thereabouts.
