Help please! Living room wall colour and alcove unit colour

I'm so indecisive I don't know what's best.

Soon to be decorating our relatively small east-facing living room. Aside from replacing the fire surround, we haven't done anything to it since moving in and I think it needs freshening up.

I like the "scandi" style and I love blue or teal shades (not too light or dark), has anyone painted their living room in colours like this and do you have any pics? or specific paint colours to recommend?

I think because the trim/moulding on the alcove units has so much detail it looks quite fussy and a bit old fashioned, so I was thinking instead of going the usual white paint for woodwork, maybe painting the whole units in the same colour as the walls might make it look a bit more modern, or am I crazy?... what do you guys think? All suggestions appreciated!

I think your room looks lovely, the woodwork on the alcove units works well with the room and the windows etc.

The only thing letting the room down is the fireplace as it looks unfinished. Think it needs a coat of paint, perhaps dark blue as you mentioned?

It depends on what else you have in the room, the sofa colours etc. It looks to be a really nice room with some lovely features. Personally, I wouldn't paint it all a blue or a dark colour as East facing rooms can be gloomy on an afternoon. Have a look on instagram, there is a total shift away from dark interiors towards more neutral warmer ones. Not that this matters, but perhaps a year of lockdown has made a difference to what people want to live with.

Thank you for all your comments! We will have a good think about the floor: it's a house on a hill so it is the ground floor, just looks high up compared with the houses opposite! Perhaps we could put down wooden flooring which would remove my fear of it being cold. Love the white fireplace surround on the blue wall, and also the blue fireplace surround!!

We can recommend the Candle Light Paint from Valspar (they can mix it for you at b&q). Then you can add yellow velvet cushions on a grey/ light blue sofa? Have a look at sofa.com and Loaf. They do sofas in the colour tone you are looking for. Carpet colour in beige would look chic and you won't get bored of it as it will allow you to be a bit more playful with furniture and cushions. For inspiration: And teal sofa's are great! But I would -personally- not put brown (weathered penny) on the walls. Especially not if it's 'just as dark' as the teal. Pick either a lighter or a darker color. Pale beige/greige, dark moss*. Offwhite would work just fine, as your midcentury vibe will come from your furniture. And orange and apple green should be used for small accents (pillows etc), not on large surfaces. (* Dulux Polished Pebble or Pebble Shore, Bronze Fig, RAL6007 or 6008?)

Hi Ellie, I’ve attached some extra photos showing the outside of the house & architect drawings of the ground floor. The kitchen was installed earlier this year after we knocked 2 walls down that separated the old kitchen, dining room & hallway that lead from the front door to the front room. Excuse the front room mess, we are in the middle of having cabinets & shelves built into both alcoves!

Hi, we had a similar issue- our firepace was a red wood colour- I painted it white and for contrast did the alcove cupboards in Little Greene Scree. I think a bit of colour would look good. Dark blue or dark grey maybe.

I’ve got a sage green in my living room (Cromarty by F&B). The room is North East facing so gets morning sun but gets a bit dimmer as the day goes on. It shouldn’t work, but I really love it. I agree your fireplace needs a lick of paint. I painted mine white because I have no vision, but I like it. I also love those dusky pink colours like Setting Plaster which sits so well with period features.
