Selkie shower board wall preparation

Hi I've been advised that before the tradesman will install Selkie shower boards in my shower cubicle they will have to replaster whole cubicle, walls are currently tiled. The tiles are still on the walls and apparently cannot be re grouted as approx 6 tiles across bottom row across 2 walls has suspected water behind them. I am however not sure why they would need to fully replaster all the cubicle before even seeing the extent of any water damage.
Does anyone know if this is usual practice before installing the selkie boards?
Any advice would be welcome thank you

I think you’d need to ensure that the water isn’t still leaking first. Once this has been confirmed then there is absolutely no reason why shower boards cannot be fixed to cover tiles.

I had tiles in my shower cubicle and went over them with Bushboard Nuance ensuring that we also purchased their BB Complete adhesive to get the guarantee. They’ve been on for many years.

Thanks Daisy for your comments. The actual leak is simply where the shower water was getting behind the tiles so once retiled properly or boarded it should be fine. I guess I was more trying to establish if when you affix the boards (Wetwall or Selkie) onto the wall and not on top of existing tiles then is it then the done thing to have to replaster. I kind of feel the job is maybe not big enough in this current climate where tradespeople are really hard to come by and therefore they have added the extra plastering to bulk up the job! Not really sure.

I haven't yet owned a Miele appliance, although I have used other people's and know that they are top quality. So I would love my first dishwasher to be a Miele and maybe this would convince my partner that having a dishwasher is an improvement on washing dishes by hand.

Rachel: Very nice, but you could've just bought glitter wallpaper y'know? Yeah I know that, but where's the fun in that? Also, my niece has glitter wallpaper in her room and I personally think that it looks awful. It's totally not the same. Also, I'm a man - So I want/have to spend loads more time, loads more money, and loads more effort on doing something that £25's wallpaper would achieve. I wouldn't have been doing it for my brothers out there if I did anything easy. I want to do a job that I can constantly moan about, make a big fuss over, make loads of unnecessary mess, and come across as a total hero to everyone that I tell. What I did was a million times better story than "I put up a few strips of wallpaper" :) AS: Valspar at B and Q do glitter ..... This is actually where I started. Talk about a massive con. It's just paint, with a tiny sachet of really fine glitter (like the old salt'n'shake crisps) that you need to open, pour in, and mix yourself. I would definitely not call it 'glitter paint' by any stretch, more 'standard paint with the odd random piece of glitter'. Now I've purchased the furniture, and put up a few shelves it's actually starting to become a really nice room. It just needs sorting out then it's pretty much complete:

Sorry- I don’t like your plan. In my opinion the space between the sink and hob is where the work happens so you are actually a bit tight for space. I think the door from the kitchen to the playroom is a massive fail- firstly you are inviting the kids to run past the cooking area, secondly is splits the kitchen and there are safety implication for having a walkway through the kitchen, I also think it makes your kitchen plan feel disjointed. I also think that if the children are young they won’t want to be in the playroom, they will want to be where you are. If you are worried about the playroom being dark this is easily sorted with better lighting and a pale coloured floor. Alternatively make this the grown up room and the kids playroom near the front door. I also think that putting the sitting area around the corner in the extension makes it feel enclosed and a little tight because of its location. I think you have put too many stools at the island and in reality people rarely use more than 3. In my opinion better to have fewer comfortable seats that are spread out with room to eat. I also think you missed an opportunity to have a cupboard near the front door to hide coats, shoes and a vacuum cleaner. I think that if you want an extra shower it may be easier to put this off the bootroom- a bigger utility/ bootroom area may help later to keep sports equipment/ dogs/ ironing etc etc out of sight. There is a privacy argument to put it where you have but I suspect the wall you have moved to take a corner off the kitchen is a job that will require a steel.

Can’t they just stick the board to the existing tiles? That is what we did. The boards are large and solid so i cannot see why re-plastering needs to be done

Not quite sure, it wasn't put to me as an option. And with "potential" water damage behind the existing tiles I also agreed it would be better to remove the tiles to see extent of any damage and fix that rather than covering up then ending up with issues in a few months time.

I just didn't foresee I'd be quoted straight off for a full replaster without checking behind the tiles.
I am currently trying to get a couple more tradespeople out to seek alternative quotes so I will ask that question once I can finally get someone around. Tradespeople are like good dust at the min!

Tradespeople are hard to get. Completely agree. That’s when they can get the supplies. It is getting harder and harder to get supplies and each time you buy something it has increased in price.

Can I ask what you did in the end, we are also fitting Selkie boards in our shower over the floor to ceiling tiles. Would love to see your finished shower

Hi Mary so far the issue is unresolved as I have really struggled to get tradespeople out to quote on the job with them being in such high demand at present!
