Welsh stone house exterior overhaul project

Hi all,

We're planning to overhaul the exterior of our Welsh stone house (north-east facing) and would very much welcome your opinions, ideas and suggestions.

1- we're planning to paint the windows in either mid-grey or dark grey

2 - We'll replace the white guttering with copper ones.

3 - not sure what colour we should repaint the front door, it is currently red but I would like something softer and inviting, an unusual colour that stands out.

4 - the windows of the extension will be mid or dark grey too.

5 - do you think it would be wise to clean up /sand the stone work before deciding on the final colour palette? The stones colours are different on the front and side of the house.

I would very much welcome any ideas, opinions and suggestions.

What a stunning house. There are so many possiblities...

Dark grey such as Black Blue or Downpipe with a dirty pink door.

White woodwork with an acid yellow door (photo below is taken in St Ives, I love the yellow with the slate).

A stoney neutral like the last image, very tasteful.

The pictures are all showing as really tiny on my screen. But yes I imagine if you're going to clean the stone then it would be a good idea to clean it before making a final decision. Door colour might depend on which direction the front door faces. I saw a lovely pale pink front door on a period cottage today, which stopped me in my tracks, it was so lovely! It was south facing and worked very well with the sunlight on it, but may not work so well in a north facing situation.

I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps.

I love a challenge, I would extend the garage to the full width of the property. Re-position the front door to the center with a window and a contemporary wide door as shown. Next I would remove all the hanging tiles and render as picture. For a full contemporary look change the windows to a dark grey profile. This will create internally a larger entrance, giving the owner more internal space, keep it open plan! I cannot see any images of the existing interior to advise a room layout. The back of the property looks rendered....I love the balcony, which I am hoping is off a living room??? Again if within budget replace the existing windows with dark grey profile, put dark grey bi folds where the sliding doors are at present, extend the patio by 1.5 meters, to allow for external seating area......keep it minimal. Spray the existing railings dark grey. A couple of strategically placed large pots with topiary trees.........Your Done!

I did also read about the Window Tax - it make sense to explain why I have so many blocked up windows. I think I do need to put a window back in on the side above the front door or at least give the impression of a window or similar - looks too plain otherwise. I think on balance sticking with just the off-white looks best and most in-keeping. The pic above has the window put back in and it does look much better balanced. Could I maybe put the window in with some obscure glass (or maybe mirrored glass) but have it blocked off on the inside? It would make very useful in-built storage in the bathroom.

Thanks so much for the recent suggestions too. I love the little Greene greens mentioned, but I am still swaying more towards neutral/greys I think, mostly because I am keen to keep my Railings front door and I’m not so sure it would work as well with the greens. Current thoughts are Railings on the window sills/ledges and then little Greene Slake Lime Mid on the render at the top and Slaked Lime Dark on the woodwork. The soffit boards at the very top are currently Black but will change to Railings to hopefully tie it all in!? Would absolutely love to have a blush front door one day, but not convinced it’s right for this house :)

The photos are too tiny to really see what you've got there.

1. Are you sure? A bit of contrast with the walls would be great.

3. Depends on the window frame color you'll pick. Pink or yellow, turquoise or sage, many options.

Hi! Thank you so much for your comments. I'll replace the photos with bigger ones. Our house is north-east facing. The pale pink sounds lovely but yes you're right I'm not sure it would work well on a north east facing stone house.

Lovely house! I think the white window and doorframes suit it perfectly, copper guttering would be a very classy addition, and a yellow front door would look fabulous.

Beautiful house. I think grey windows would look rather bland. much better to have a contrast to the lovely stone. Step away from the grey! I think simple white windows would be more In keeping, but those sage green ones that Rinked has shared would be perfect with the style of the house.

Hi colourhappy, Thank you so much. Great suggestions but I think the stone work on our house is in a cooler palette of greys than than the ones on pics you posted (warmer/beige stone work). I love the ones you posted thought, this is what we are after in terms of look and feel - but I'm still having doubts as our house looks very grey and a bit austere to me so I still can't decide..

Yes you're right. I think an acid yellow front door would be fabulous with the grey stone and the roof....and the flowers. Maybe the windows can stay white?

Im all for changing the colour of the window frames and door - rinked’s first one with sage green looks lovely. I have also seen in a village near me a house with cream, and another with taupe both of which are stone houses (Yorkshire - quite a cool “ wuthering heights” palette )- or go bold and go black.

Instead of yellow for the front door - which is always a bit stark and sea-sidey - how about a mustard colour?

Absolute gorgeous house, and I suspect once the stones are cleaned, and a few colourful plants added, it will look a dream.

I also like @rinked’s suggestion, bearing in mind that over time your copper guttering will patina, a bluey/green colour will go well during the changes.

Maybe paint the windows to match the stone grout and the door in a statement colour.

Would definately keep the windows white, against a newly cleaned stone they will look great, i am loving the sage green front door and with perhaps matching planters eaither side would look really smart, absolutely stunning house though x

If you're going to get the stone cleaned, I'd also have that modern cement based "hard" mortar taken out and replaced with a lovely lime mortar; that's how it would've been built; it's kinder to buildings and much more in keeping, but then the windows and extension aren't in keeping, so perhaps no need to be a purist... But those mortar straplines are very harsh. I'd stay with white windows or the sage green and contrast the door with either a dark blue if your windows are white or if sage, then the same colour. If not use Colourhappy's last photo suggestion all round. Nice and warm and mellow.
