How to divide a garden?

Would love some ideas on how to tastefully divide our garden.

We have a large-ish elevated garden which is about 50m in length. At the house end it is straight up some stone steps to a patio and fish pond. At the furthest point we have recently built a large summer house.

The challenge we have is that we want to keep our little boy and visiting children away from the pond, stone steps and large drop off the patio.

How can we tastefully divide the garden without just building a fence straight across it? We have large Crittal style windows across the back of the house, so view out is important.

We have just had all the old broken trellis removed and now need to decide what to do with it.

Yesterday’s Garden Rescue on BBC1 was a garden that was divided into 3 circles. It wasn’t as big as your garden but might be worth watching on catch up. Personally I would fill in the pond if you have young children. It just isn’t worth the risk. You could replace with a water feature instead. Meanwhile here’s a couple of ideas.

Its hard to judge without seeing the fireplace elevation but you could also consider trying the smaller sofa floating infront of the door and using the large sofa as a kitchen divider. A throw over the back of it will potentially help crumbs/sticky fingers. The space will feel more grounded if you then invest in a large rug (Ikea have some large natural sisals at good prices) which fit under the front of both sofas (as opposed to float in front). The walls look quite pink at the minute. I would be inclined to tone them with the kitchen cabinets or go a more stone colour to tone with the work tops/floor (Paint and Paper library do a great stone colour in varying depths). I would suggest you 'play' with the furniture layout initially; afterall, its not glued to the floor! Good luck Helen

Though in all seriouslness, our allotment society has just decided to return the pristine cut lawns in our orchard to become a wildflower meadow. The preparation and seeding took place last weekend - I look forward to the results! May the pollinators look favourably on my berries & beans...

Thank you, I will watch it. if it was just the pond, I would agree with you but the pond is on the patio, which is just as dangerous, as its a sheer drop down! i just need the whole bottom of the garden sectioned off!

The pond is sunken and literally just to the right in this pic, located up on the patio!!

Just dont know how to section it without it looking like a paddock or animal fence!!!!

We have a pond that was here when we moved in with our then 2 year old (he is now 21) our pond was straight out from our kitchen. I loved the pond and it attracted loads of wildlife. we put a grill over it at the water level and the flag iris grew through it so wasn't visible. I also put planters around it . I would use large planter troughs to act as a barrier to the patio drop. Deep troughs give you loads of scope for amazing planting opportunities, I have grown tall verbena in mine and sunflowers which the blue tits love in the winter. We had 2 more boys and now the grill is off the pond and it has given the boys hours of fun over the years.
