Sloping garden. I would really appreciate any design ideas please xx

Help 🥺 I don't know where to start !!!
I have a sloping garden that I would like to flatten and make more modern with some sort of stepped access on the steeper part so I'm not sliding down the banking in the rain. Thank you so much. X

You have a nice garden! I'm not a landscape architect, but it might be good to make a stepped garden though it's also good to keep some sloped grass areas.

I would start by mapping out areas of your garden that get morning sun, evening sun, shade in the daytime etc. Then you can decide what you want to use those areas for. I presume the shot taken is evening sun, so the top area with a table gets the last sun of the day and you'd want to keep that for a seating area.

I do really like the lower patio area, great job on that. You'll need to terrace or add a set of steps to the upper area of the garden to get it flat and without a slippery bank. What is the height difference between the top of your patio stairs and table and chair area on the top grass?

Depending on what is behind that hedge, and how much your budget is, one idea would be to add a retaining wall along the back perimeter of your garden so you could drop the level of the garden a metre or so on the top tier, slope what is left. Add a small set of steps to make easier access the lowered top area, or perhaps a whole new set of steps that goes all the way from lower to upper level. Good luck with the project!

Hello there, Have you considered creating terraces? I did a design for a sloping back garden some time ago... please feel free to take a look at my website here. That project was inspired by the surrounding hills. In your case, depending on the style of your house and the location, perhaps a series of terraces might work well. These terraces could be either flat or slightly tilted so to reduce the height of the step between them... If you like curves, the terraces could be a series of circles for example... hope this helps!

Hi April, planting sounds a great idea if you already have space for sitting. It will be easier and so much more cost effective than terracing. The RHS are a great guide when choosing plants. Their website has filters for clay soils etc. and you can set up a profile to receive care tips :-) https://www.rhs.org.uk/#nav-gardening . You might want to consider wildflower seeds to save on the number of plants you have to buy. These are great for wildlife too. I use Scotia Seeds a lot https://www.scotiaseeds.co.uk/ they have seeds for many situations. We're in Scotland and they're suited to us, but you may have a supplier nearer you. A final tip is to think about seasonal interest. For example, having Primroses which flower in winter, as well as spring bulbs and summer wildflowers. Update on our garden project! Thanks for the sleeper retaining wall ideas - we are very pleased with end result! See before and after picture. Still a few finishing touches to be done but getting there and finally have some grass growing after a winter of mud, mud, mud!!! Just need some bushes/plants to go along top edge of sleepers as it is quite a drop off the edge, dont want anything too big but just something to give it a bit of ad edge to save falls! Any comments or ideas what to use for this please?

Hi there, I am a bit late here, but just to ratify what Sonia said: I would not get rid of the York stone slabs at all! It would be a really good investment to get them cleaned and relaid! They look perfect for your surroundings! I also loved the stone wall that you have in your garden as well! Loads of elements that already add character to it! As for all the features that you want to add to your patio, I do agree that it is a lot for a single space, so maybe the best option is to create another patio area somewhere else in your garden and subdivide these features that you want among the different patio areas. Use paths to connect them and you have a journey through your garden! I know it is out of the scope of what you want, but I would also be tempted to adding some planting beds around the garden. Everything was put on hold so the garden is just as it was.

Thank you Akira for saying it's a nice garden, I'm thinking of a stepped garden as it's so high.

Also ... Thank you Peter for all your ideas. Yes it was the evening sun. It's a lovely view from up there but sadly not used enough because of the steep slope. I'm going to take your idea of a retaining wall on top to drop the level of the garden and maybe slope the lower bits. I would love to keep the grass on the sloping area but would be a nightmare to cut so will have to look at ideas.
