Well, you could have a box extension with a flat roof and it would be nice if it's a large or fully glazed, or even with a corner glazing, but your local planning dept might not happy with that. So it comes back to my first comment.
It is unlikely your planning authority will allow you to build double storey right on the boundary line. I see the problem. Bringing the left side down would hight light the fact the second storey overhangs the garage. Bringing the right side up might not go down well with your neighbours and planning authority. So I think the easiest option would be to change the pitch of the house roof to match the garage roof.
It may be good to have a subtle differenciation with timber cladding which matches with your trellis on the ground floor. It might be better than a cliched glass box. Better thermal property as well.
Hi arc3d. I didn't realise it's on the boundary line as the photo was cropped if I don't click the image. In that case I agree with you, but do you mean to 'change the pitch of the garage roof to match the house roof' ? It is likely to have a better chance in term of planning though keeping the roof line and having a side dormer might be another option as long as no windows to the side?
Great comments and participation, though I must admit some suggestions are going above my head trying to visualise what is suggested. I always thought Councils were very much against flat roofs.
You need to find an architect or an architectural designer near you and consult them to propose and visualise what you want to do. Generally speaking, front and side extensions are more difficult than rear extensions for getting a planning permission, but it's obviously a case by case. Your council have a planning pre-application advice service so you could use it as well, but it's important you have a good set of documents to discuss your case with the council.
