Glass fencing/balustrade for Garden

Hi all, we have a split level garden with a steep set of stairs leading up to the grass area from the patio. With two kids under 3 this is becoming a serious hazard, particularly as the top flower bed also has a drop off to the patio (photos below). We want to put in a glass ‘fence’ across the top and down the stairs so you don’t break the view up to our little patch of green but there is some safety! Can anyone recommend where I should start for quotes on this? I’m struggling to know what type of professional could supply and install this.

Assume you'll need some type of gate at top of opening at top of stairs? Is it going to be permanent? If not, I'd just put wooden fence with gate to open at top of stairs, then in a few years or so you can remove it. Cheaper and temporary, they're only young a short time.

I love the idea of a glass fence and handrail. I’ve seen some panels on ebay but i guess they need to be bespoke for the stairs. Your stairs look quite steep so i would definitely put a rail.

Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️

I have just had my kitchen floor tiled in porcelain tiles that are woodplank style, it looks lovely and can actually be used outdoors, you could make your patio follow on from the floor material in your kitchen to blur the boundary between indoors and out. Tiles are very low maintenance compared to decking too. Then because you are looking for a low maintenance garden, I would look at decorative gabions to make the retaining wall and plant alpines so that they grow down the sides eventually. It looks like you have children from the climbing frame and trampoline so, how about putting weed-proof membrane and a deep layer of bark chipping instead of grass and letting them have the lower area for a play area. Not much maintenance needed, just top up of chippings. Included a few houzz photos for inspiration

Hi, thanks for your comments. The metal parts are stainless steel which we only provide in a brushed satin finish or a mirror polished finish. They appear the same but perform differently depending on the environment, due to the differences in the chemical composition. That's a really interesting thought, for some properties a darker look could be really effective! With the wire infill systems we do offer coated wire, so there are different colour options in regards to that. There is a cost difference. I would suggest visiting a few different websites and asking for quotes. The glass channel systems are usually the more expensive option as much thicker glass is used to provide the structural stability required and this is what adds to the cost. The price for glass balustrade depends on the number of metres and the glass thickness; another large influencing factor is the location and the difficulty of installation as labour costs are a large element of the final cost. Unfortunately we don't do installations in Scotland, we're based in the Hertfordshire area. Hopefully this helps and wish you all the best in finding the right system for you! :)

Don't forget that glass is used for balustrades in shopping centres, etc. without any safety concerns. You do need however to make sure that the glass that they have quoted for is toughened and preferably a minimum of 10mm thick. Personally I like the aesthetic of their offer and had not seen it used in a domestic garden setting before! :-)

Thanks both - we may consider a little fence too but that would be temporary until the kids are older. Quite like the idea of glass for the longer term too - but I think it’s going to be quite expensive!
