Stone or porcelain outside

Hi there!

We are getting our garden done at the moment and need to chose materials. We are going to have a raised balcony made of decking and there are two flat areas where we will want to put either stone or porcelain. We have mainly looked at sandstone, limestone and slate but for some reason everyone lately is talking about porcelain.

What should we do? what are the pros and cons of each one? Appreciate your help!

Hi Paula, I can only comment on slate, I'm afraid. Brazilian Slate is non porous, incredibly dense and attractive too. Reasonably priced and works in a traditional or contemporary setting. Excellent natural slip resistance even when wet and great for areas with heavy traffic. Cleans up very well and with a good sealer applied before and after laying, this job will be even easier (make sure to use a suitable exteror sealer)

I’ve got Sandstone and porcelain in my garden. Of the two I prefer the sandstone as it’s easier to clean than the porcelain. It comes in several shades too. It has a more rustic finish. I suggest you don’t go for the very cheap sandstone as it can be poor quality. I got mine from Global Stone who have suppliers all over the country.

There are multiple options for what you need but first of all there are a few questions to ask. 1. What are you hoping to install the tiles on externally? 2. Do you need a grip finish (advisable with children or if there is chance for build up on the tiles) 3. Are you looking for a 10mm internal and 20mm external tile? I think we have a 300x1200 20mm plank available to us with a 10mm internal option which isn't currently on our website. As a tile importer and retailer, it's very rare for a porcelain tile to crack if installed properly. I'd not recommend juggling your Le Creuset to test the theory though... More and more tilers are using a decoupling matting such as Durabase to take as much movement out of the tile as possible. We also supply flexible adhesive and grout, so with a properly flat floor, it's rare for us to get a call from a grumpy client. We supply a lot of large format "infinity" look tiles, where you have an identically sized anti-slip External version of the Interior tile. Most are 8-9mm, so need a concrete base that mirrors the internal floor. If there is a 20mm version, then a sand & cement base can be used. As for kitchens, always tile the entire floor before the kitchen goes in. This means that the kitchen installer has a blank canvas to work on. It also means that the floor is completely sealed, so the chances of liquid ingress under the tiles (under the units) is pretty much nil. Finally, it also means that if you have any white goods that fail under the work surface, they can just be slid out, rather than having to remove what could be long an heavy lump of marble or granite to get them out. The additional cost will be negligible compared to an insurance claim...

Hi Vandana, although we agree with some points Minipie mentioned, but we think glossy marble in the house is just beautiful. Concerns that it feels cold can easily be solved by installing underfloor heating. And the fact that is glossy, we agree it can be slippery, but in the living room we presume you will have a nice big rug to make it cozy and non-slippery, but in the kitchen, that glossy finish will make it much easier to clean the floor.
