Underfloor heating drama! Help please!

Sorry to be asking for help again. Our builders have laid the UFH leaving this height differential with the adjoining room. Glass doors are due to be fitted. We do not want a step. They have suggested putting 25mill ply over the UFH and laying the engineered wood flooring on top of that. Will that work? Will it still heat? I know I should trust what they say but I hate taking someone’s word for it with no knowledge when it’s so important!! Any help much appreciated! Thank you x

Get advice from the underfloor heating supplier about how much covering is recommended. It seems like if you cover these heating pipes with a thick layer of ply before the wood floor you are adding thermal resistance and making it less likely the heating will be effective.

The floor level really should have been the first thing they worked out.

I would have them lift the UFH and put the 25mm ply down first and then lay the pipe on top.

Don't take their word for it ask the supplier. They just want to move on to the next job. You will be left adding extra radiators or electric heaters afterwards.

Multi fuel stove or underfloor heating

Go for both! Underfloor heating works well when wall space is at a premium due to window openings; properly designed with thermostatic control it should keep the room warm. If you are able to install a multi fuel stove then do so - they can be a great feature in a room and will warm the room (and possibly much of the house!) on those super chilly days - the thermostat on the underfloor heating will ensure this compensates for stove's heat. The only issue we come across with stoves is positioning the flues - particularly if they are in single storey extensions. Of course it is possible to incorporate an aesthetic chimney into the design but there are planning permissions and building regulations to consider - height of flue in relation the windows, roofs etc. If a stove is not possible because of flue issues, consider a gas fire with a balanced flue through and external wall - again these can create a great feature as well as help warm a room

Regardless of what finish you choose, the thing with wet UFH is that it relies on heat building up in and being stored in the floor slab. You don’t really ever turn it off in the winter, you just set the room thermostats for different temperatures at different times of the day. In the summer you just set the thermostat to frost setting so it never kicks in. We have tiles and I like having a cool floor in the summer heat, as do my dogs. In autumn and spring other finishes may feel more cosy as sometimes the tiled floor doesn’t feel obviously warm when the air is up to temp, tho it’s not properly cold either.

Thanks both. Up early arguing with the builders in my head 🤦🏻‍♀️ This is beyond annoying as we’ve already had issues with the levels. They wanted to put down overlay UFH but we didn’t want a step to the hall or family room, so they dug down, and now there’s an even bigger step! Thanks again, this really helps.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️they couldn’t rip it up as it’s glued down. So they’re just leaving it down and adding more ply then more UFH 😬
