Living room curtain / rug advice please

I’m looking for curtains and a rug to go with a teal velvet sofa. It’s an odd shaped room which is painted white with a French oak floor. We love the brightness of it, having just renovated a fairly dark space. We are taking our time over what will go on the walls but the room faces onto the street (though it is at the end of a cul-de-sac) so we need to sort some curtains out. I can’t decide whether to try to match the teal with a solid colour or go for a light background with a teal (and/or some other) accent. We are waiting for a long footstool in the same fabric as the cushions on the sofa and the other furniture in the room has to stay for now (except the brown cube thing). Ideas for a rug and ceiling light would also be welcome. I have tried to add a couple of photos - the one of the sofa is taken from just inside the door and there is another small window to my right. It’s used as a TV room/lounge. We are at the end of a major project so have very little decision making ability left! Thanks in advance.

Love the sofa. A nice statement colour! I would work well would be some neutrals to give the sofa its moment. But a rug/ accessories that will complement the other bits of furniture in the room. with browns and golds.

I would recommend a rug that has texture but plainer and lighter to open up the room a bit. But also a curtains something that is softer and bright and light as well. of a more airy and delicate nature over some blackout blinds.

Or this one here With a slightly different textured rug but still plain and white.

I do like neutral curtains, similar to the walls, but a teal pattern would also look great. A simple neutral rug would look nice.

I'd definitely try and remove the wall friezes and then re-painting. I'd change the TV stand for something more fitted into the alcove that you can hide the speakers in. Then address the curtains, they're quite thick and stop the light coming in, so I don't know what's outside, but hanging a pole with floor length curtains would be better, then add a nice rug, coffee table to match the display unit and another if you wish to match in the corner that you have the plant, ( that table is too tiny for the room ). Pick a colour scheme and then go from there.

Hi Suzie. I'd lighten up the sofa a little. Choose white and Grey patterned cushions and then add a solid colour. I've picked blush (or nearly in the 1st pic!) but green would also work well or others! Perhaps just have cushions in the corners and add a throw over the arm by the lamp. Try pulling the sofa away from the curtains a little and also towards the door probably a foot. I'd go for a sisal rug in warm tones (large enough for front feet of the sofa to sit on) as I think the natural fibre will work well with the logs and wallpaper and tone in with the floor. I'd go for linen curtains (have only had a quick look but have attached a link to blush ones :)) I'd try moving the lamp to the corner by the door. If in budget I'd add a lamp on the cabinet to the right of the fire. First thing that makes the paper too busy is the stuffed room. So declutter. If nowhere else to put it, find a spacious cupboard/drawers. Paint it Yeabridge Green for example. Don't design around a sofa set you don't like. Find some pillows, rug and blankets that go well with the paper and floor. Make yourself a moodboard with curtains and such and then decide. Here are some F&B paint colors that could work well (I've tried them all, would not advise any other). Personally I like the first three on the left. But haven't seen your room (and taste), so no further suggestions..

You already have a lovely cosy carpet. I agree with Carolina that a footstool/ottoman would look lovely in the middle. The ones with storage are very useful. I have one and you can get loads in it! They can be used as a coffee table (with a tray) or you can rest your tired feet on it.

Thank you Sharon and Sonia. I think neutral is the way to go. I was getting a bit caught up with needing to get teal in everything but the photos capture the feel I wanted for the room. Thanks for replying so quickly as well.

@dixon design studio uk do you have a view on rug placement? Sofa is opposite TV in one alcove which is couch bigger than the one in the other side of the fireplace. It used to be an L shaped lounge diner. We will eventually get a chair to go in there too. Should the rug go in front of the fire or the sofa or be big enough to cover most of the room do you think?
