Velux or not in new master bedroom ?

Hi,

Been amazing forum so far and builder mentioned something this morning that thrown me into a bit of a dilemma, he asked why not putting velux in the vaulted ceiling of new master bedroom,

Here is the elevation have marked in red sides where could put velux windows into lofted ceiling:

The ceiling is hipped and vaulted back to the ensuite, so depending on angle of hip roof could potentially have a velux centered on the bed above the bed and on opposite ceiling slope. Builder had said can get remote controlled opening with remote control blackout blinds, when mentioned to a friend he said already have a big sliding door area 2100 wide so already have enough light in a small room and he wouldn't do it. Guess will look out of window more from bed and not sure if the velux would add much and also creates a failure point for future although do seem very popular/reliable.

What do people think, any thoughts greatly appreciated,

I love Velux and rooms with lots of light. But for a bedroom where you want to sleep and have it dark I think they aren't necessary assuming you have plenty of light through other windows. You'd need black out blinds on them and it get complicated.

Looking at plans if you can do in dressing room or bathroom that would be lovely!

This is very similar to my bedroom, i have my bed opposite the door and my wardrobe and chest of drawers right next to each other opposite my bed I have a white laminate floor and all the walls are painted white (except for the plum colour wallpaper you can sort of see in the 1st pic which is on a chimney breast right next to my door!!) To keep the room feeling spacious I just went for venetian blinds at the window in a beige colour It works well and doesn't feel cramped at all

Ok, this is a great space so easy to fix. People might give you specific advice but really it depends on your taste. There are 3 important things you are lacking that will fix your room - zoning, texture and lighting. zoning - if you can walk into a room and read it immediately it translate as boring. To fix this you need to draw the eye around the room. You can use furniture, art, points of interest to do this. Perhaps a cool chair outside the bathroom door or a chaise lounge. Perhaps a big banana plant or fiddle fig between your windows. Perhaps a huge piece of art above the bed. Perhaps some cool wallpaper art there (check out Curious Egg). A reading nook? How about filling that massive space between the end of your bed and wardrobes? You could put a huge pouffe, love seat or ottoman on a rug there so it looks a bit like a dressing room area with seating. Anthropologie do some great options. texture - you need a huge rug to go partially under your bed and soften the room. Try French connection home or la redoute for affordable options. Why not texturise the wall your bed is against. Do the whole wall or a textured headboard made of timber etc. Abigail ahern does some great, easy to assemble faux wall options. Again I would recommend plants. Not everyone likes these I need a bedroom but again Abigail ahern does some great fauxs. lighting - the room is very light and bright but at night it probably can look a bit stark or cold. I would definitely advocate some free standing lights. These should be near whatever zones you create. Certainly I would have some bedside lamps and maybe a taller freestanding lamp elsewhere. Rule of thumb in a room this size is at least 5 lamps or freestanding lighting units! finally, if you like neutrals and want to avoid colour, neutral colour through texture is a great solution. A beni oudain rug, a large sheepskin over the bottom of the bed, a large wicker chair. And of course, plants. good luck!

We are doing the same. weve done our build in 2 phases so weve just conpleted the single storey rear extension and about to start building the double storey in April. Although we are making our front box room bigger by taking it out over the new attached garage to make hopefully 4 double bedrooms. the room will only be 2.38m wide and around 4.3m long with a 90cm space for a shower, toilet and sink. hoping it works and the above from man about the house gives me hope it will as i plan to do something similar with a small area at the back literally for the bed and some bedside tables then a small walk through wardrobe area and then a thin ensuite. will decide where to put stud walls once the shell and floor in built so i can determine the space needed.

If it was the only source of light then yes, but definitely not above the bed!!

Unfortunately the vault stops at the en suite wall as starts to go into main house and there are beams running both ways so cant get into bathroom/dressing area, would have been great in the bathroom.

Have seen some Velux windows with built in black out blinds that like windows are operated by remote control but getting expensive, forgot to mention the window above the bed gets morning sun and the one on opposite side the afternoon sun so would be plenty of light but guess could get hot - although opening them would also add quite a bit of ventilation as the sliding doors get the heat through hottest part of the day.

I think velux do super sound insulated ones, although no idea of cost, but I’d consider whether rain noise bothers you. some like it, some dont! It’s a lot noisier on roof lights!
