help, we r having a garden office /bar built

Hi. We are having a garden office/ bar built in our smallish garden. I am feeling the pressure of getting the decor right inside. I would like it to feel warm & inviting. Any ideas for colours? Decor/ style etc. Pls see plans below

Hello Joanne,

I would love to have a chat about the style you like and how you envision this patio. The project looks very interesting. Please find attached some images with existing projects that may help you decide which line to follow. I think the bar design may affect the other elements from your propsal.

There are 3 proposals. One is neutral (gray, black and brown), another more Mediterranean style with lots of white and bright colors and the third is about using intense colours and bringing the nature inside giving lots of character to the proposal. The three options are interesting and could perfectly fit depending on what is your vision.

This is a difficult one. Many people see garages as a selling factor, but many are not wide or long enough for modern cars. Also, modern cars are now built to withstand all of the elements, and with anti-corrosive paint etc they can more than happily survive outside. If you do not use the garage as a place to 'store' the car then it will inevitably become a place to store everything else. From a garden design point of view think about the direction of the sun. If the garage gets most of the sun during the day then perhaps it would be better to remove it. If the area gets sun later in the evening then again, perhaps take it down. By the sounds of it you have plenty of options for parking elsewhere so in my opinion I would take it down. If the base of the garage is in good condition, you could re-purpose the area for a summerhouse or garden office or patio. With regards to the concrete and gravel garden make sure there is enough drainage and that any excess water runs away from the house, otherwise you could end up with rising damp issues. I fully understand why some people prefer a 'maintenance-free' garden with the use of concrete and gravel, but I would always favour soft planting. Yes, it would cost to remove the garage and the concrete but if you and your family get more pleasure from a family garden, then surely this is money well-spent. You should also remember that outside space in the form of a garden is a big selling point - perhaps more than an awkward garage. If you live in a family catchment area, then future buyers will be looking for a family garden. You can still include a patio and storage sheds to replace the garage, but these can be more easily disguised in to a well-designed garden. So, as I say this is a difficult question, but in my opinion I would remove the garage and create a wonderful garden that you can enjoy.

Thanks Kate I really love it but for years I worked from a small room just like yours. Even a cupboard dedicated to your love for crafts its a luxury for every crafty person out there. I run a paper craft business, I teach classes and we cover everything from greetings cards, to memory keeping, home decor.. you name it. But I am a *MAKE IT* addict and probably tried most crafts in my time :) Please update this thread as you go along I would love to see your finished little piece of heaven <3

I like MATH's idea to go dark, don't think you have to paint the door surrounds though. Dark colours sort of disappear, and it looks great as a background for plants too. Could you add windows, either flanking the doors or as in the example below? Depending on how you want to place furniture. The more light, the larger it seems on the inside. And I saw this example, with trellis on the sides instead of solid walls.

Hello, my previous flat was very similar except your bedroom at the back was the kitchen and your kitchen was a dining room. The main problem with the current layout is when you have very young children and you’re in the kitchen preparing food, you can’t keep and eye on the children or talk to them whilst multi-tasking. If you don’t mind me asking, are all 3 bedrooms currently occupied? If not and only 2 are occupied, I would use the back bedroom as a dining room and can also be used for the kids to play. When you come to sell, depending on how many children you have then, you could always carve up the living room to make a very small bedroom on the left. These flats are great when there are only 2 people, it just gets a bit challenging when the family expands. Also you don’t want to spend too much money renovating if you are going to sell in the future.
