Garden advice please

I previously posted on here regarding our garden before we moved in. We are in now and don't know where to start! What we do know is that we want it to be safe for the children to play and currently due to the different levels it doesn't feel that safe. We also want a nice area to sit and socialise. The greenhouse is a bit tired with a few panes missing, it was used for storage by the previous owners, so likely to get rid of it. We are not currently keen gardeners, so want the garden to be quite low maintenance but would love a herb garden!
Where is the best place to start for novices like us?
Any ideas for the space?

Yes I remember your garden. I would keep things simple so a nice lawn for the kids to play on, surrounded by a few trees and shrubs. If you go for evergreen shrubs they tend to be low maintenance. Things like Ceanothus, Photinia Red Robin, Hibiscus and Cistus. You will need to check whether the different areas are mostly sunny or shady as this is vital. I’ve also noticed there are a few awkward level changes so I would remove them, level the soil and add more lawn. That pond area could be emptied and it could become a herb bed, as it’s near the house. It needs to drain well so if you could add drainage holes if it doesn’t have any. Herbs need sunshine and need quite a sparse soil, garden soil from another part of the garden will be fine. You can can add grit to help in drain. Of course herbs grown on any sunny site. A nice patio is always welcome. My favourite paving is Indian Sandstone and it comes in many shades.

Advertise your greenhouse locally, particularly if there are any allotments nearby. Allotment holders are generally keen recyclers and reusers. Am sure someone will want it and be willing to take it away.

From what you say I think you’ve got a good idea of where you want your plants to be. Most of the shrubs you have listed can grow very big (particularly the buddleia and camellia) so my advice is to check the labels for their name and variety and look up on google for their eventual height and spread and also how to care for them. My feeling is that in a 3m circle that 3 or 5 shrubs (odd numbers always look more natural) would look best depending on their eventual height/ spread then infill the rest with ground cover, bulbs and perennial plants as the shrubs/trees are growing. Do also check what soil and sunlight conditions they like. The acer and camellia are acidic soil loving plants and may need some ericaceous compost adding to the soil and they do best in part shade. You can get a soil ph tester cheaply from garden centers. Mulch the soil well with manure or well rotted compost to give new plants a really good start. I Also think you’re doing the best by starting with young shrubs as they will adapt to your soil and conditions much better than larger specimens. Good luck with your gardening, I myself have dug a great big hole in the lawn as I need to get my seedlings somewhere:-).

Hi Kerry, you have not indicated the age of your mum ( and rightly so) but one really important consideration is making the garden age proof. My very fit mum moved house a few years ago and when we redesigned her garden we factored in her love of gardening but also the need for her to be able to continue using the space as she got older. A number of years on, her decline in strength has not hampered her from being able to potter and continue her love of gardening. Whatever you decide to go with, it would be worthwhile keeping this factor in the mixing pot. The steep steps without a handrail may work now but the fact the washing needs to be carried as you negotiate these may be problematic in the future. If you are redesigning, then maybe ensuring the area directly outside the house on the house level is increased in size to accommodate the washing area and the access to the upper area is improved. My mum gets such a boost from being able to access her garden and is out enjoying being outdoors on a daily basis.

Summer House/ Garden Room advice please

We’ve had a large summerhouse built and have been using it since Dec. It has a toilet and shower and sink for doing a little washing up. It’s being used as an office as well as a man games room. It’s about 70m from our house and the water supply and drainage was a must to gain maximum usage and also stop dirty children running through the house in the summer. We did have a water supply half way up from a previous installation. The drainage added cost, but the company we went with used a pumped system which needed much less digging and can be hidden in bushes. We have 2 wall heaters for heat, as we decided to save on the cost of under floor heating. The floor is very cold, slippers are a must - I’m not sure that underfloor would have been enough though.
