Kitchen/Diner layout help!!!
After purchasing my first home, I need some advice in terms of kitchen/diner layouts! The room is 5.3mx4.8m and I’m really struggling. I would ideally like a wall of cabinets, an island with bar stools and a dining table (4/6 seats). But I’m starting to think maybe it would be better to have an island with a dining table coming out of it? Or even an island with built in dining table like shown on pics. Any advice is welcomed!!!

2 years ago2 double bedrooms, 1 single bedroom. There’s a velux window at the back right, but no other windows. Plan to stay for 5ish years

Comments (20)The porch area isnt big enough just for wellies etc unfortunately but that would have been great to get the kitchen area to a larger size. I think I might have to scrap the utility area sadly I just can't see how I can fit it in and have a good size kitchen/diner and potential living area in one. I do like the previous floorplan idea about cutting across the extension and fitting a utility in there but if i have to knock down the old outside wall and fit a large rsj to hold it up alot of expense and not sure the presence of a utiliy would financial justify it? if so then happy to spend the extra. something I need to look into abit more possibly. Comments (7)I like the layout- I don’t think you can do much else and there is not enough space for an island and a peninsula would cut down the kitchen space. Personally I think the extra storage at the dining end is useful. Personally I think there are a couple of extra things you could consider:- Firstly there are drawers under the hob flanked by cupboards. Personally I would rather see a wall of drawers to give you longer horizontal lines to make the space seem wider. Secondly I would prefer the storage at the dining end of the room to stop 300/400mm from each corner for an unfitted look which I think also contributes to a feeling of space. If there is no bin planned then you need that planned in a cabinet on the sink wall. Personally I prefer to see a wider raised cabinet over the hob as I think the likely lower cabinets each side crowd the hob. It looks like your fridge opens the wrong way and doesn’t fit in the units. I would rather see an integrated fridge- if it has to be free standing don’t build cabinets around it, put it at the end of the run. I think fitting cabinets around a fridge frames it and I think normally we only put a frame around treasured pictures not the plainest lump of metal in the house. Next you say the dining area feels too formal- I would make it more comfortable , choose a round table and upholstered chairs with a chandelier over. Flooring- your choose kinda depends on the kitchen cabinet choices. If you choose wood in your kitchen then porcelain tiles laid on the diagonal will help it seem wider. A wood floor direction can also help it feel wider. A rug under the table will also help the room seem less long. Lastly consider the lighting. Of course it needs to be light enough to cook but when you are sat relaxing or entertaining at your table you need to be able to switch off the ceiling lights in the kitchen and create an ambiance from under cabinet lighting, an over table light (with a dimmer), lighting in the dining end storage (glass cabinets?) or walk over lights that spill light up the wall...See MoreLayout help for kitchen/lounge/diner. Comments (4)I think shortening the lounge is a great idea. Could the new kitchen door go through the cupboard in the hall next to the shower room? This would make the new wall nicely balanced with the window in the new dining room. Comments (9)plenty of room i'd say! i'd stick it in the bottom end behind a wall of tall units for the kitchen (fridge, freezer, oven tower, pantry) and then have base units only along the wall facing bay window (to keep it bright and airy and maximise the width of the room as much as possible). then the bay window could be a lovely built-in seated area for table, or there's space for an island and then the bay window becomes circulation space. the top end looks like glass all the way round? so assuming dining table would go there - but if you did the window seat and table then that could be seating area instead....See Morerinked
2 years agoYour inspirational kitchens are lovely, but an island with stools and a dining table simply won't fit in your house, see left floorplan. The one with the settee is cute, that could work, haven't made an example of that one though.
I did a C-layout, but really think it's still too big for the house. So I also did a complete relocation, removed dividing wall, straightforward L-kitchen, spacious lounge with views into the back.

2 years agoYet without island there would be tons more space for big parties, as your lounge won't fit that much people.
