Wraparound extension - skylight configuration/locations... help!?

Hello, so I'm trying to figure out how to configure the roof glazing in a side return and rear extension. I don't have much experience of this, but have come up with 4 options just based on examples I have seen online! I would appreciate any advice/input on these. My questions would be - 1) Overall, is it too much glazing? We want a light space but is it overkill? 2) Are there 'standard' sizes of glazing panel that I should be sticking to? 3) If any of my 4 options seem suitable, which would you choose and why?

Hi. This is an interesting design question. I wonder why no one's commented on this. This seems like a lot of roof lights. You'll get good daylight, but the space could over-heat in summer and lose heat in winter through them. First thing I wondered is why you have a full-width skylight(s) just behind the windows at the back. I assumed there's a fully glazed foldable screen and glazed double door to the garden/decking. You are making the original house deeper, so if you want to have the similar daylight level at the back of this space (living /dining/kitchen?), then you'd put full width skylight at the line of original house. The full-width roof light is not used efficiently at the current position unless you want to make the front bright for other reasons (though I don't know which direction is facing south). Having said that, your option 1 or 2 without (or smaller) skylght behind the foldable screen might be good enough. For the 'line of first floor flat above', if it's the position of the wall, then there might be a beam going across to hold it. As there is no column there on the plan, the beam might pass just under your roof light if you don't align them. At roof light manufacturer's web site you'll find standard sizes they produce in their brochure. Some roof lights are for sloped roofs and some are for flat roofs, so you have to choose a suitable product depending on the angle of your roof.

Thanks Akira, good points. I've moved the wider skylight back as per your suggestion, in order to get a beter balance of light throughout the space, and also reduced the glazing sizes in the side-extension part. Let me know if you think this is a better direction to go in:

Thanks for the reply, don't think I'm quit at that stage yet though. Was more looking for general ideas on where cooking/dining areas could be located and how to fit in the utility and loo. Hoping that others who have done similar projects could share ideas on how to get the best layout for the space.

Without sizes it’s a bit tricky to advise specifically but I’ll add some comments that immediately spring to mind ... re the loo - could you enter from hall still, but have to loo and basin in the laundry area (on left side of that room) - as long as you can keep space to have a separate laundry stack that’s accessible from kitchen - that could work ? (Will possibly need an RSJ when you knock through - so factor that and SE into costs etc ). Re kitchen - an opening window is always a bonus in a kitchen - L shape or straight run with an island would both work - if you went for straight run you could have a window seat in the end wall - there’s a project on my pro page that’s similar - Kirsty’s kitchen - click on my name or icon to get there and have a look if you like . Re corner post/pillar from former corner of house - if it’s within the island that works better than if it’s close to it - personally I’d leave it were it is and work with it - but if your budget is big - then look at ways to remove it if you can . Tables come in many forms - from Bavarian beer tables to wall hung fold down ones - so with a bit of clever thinking - hopefully we could squeeze one in for you ! Hope that helps ! :-)

Hi Deni, From your plans it appears the Utility Area must have been a Garage a while ago; I would turn this space into a Playroom with a WC next to it (you have a couple of unnamed small rooms before you get to your Utility Room at the moment), then convert your existing Kitchen into a Utility and have a single storey rear extension to accommodate an open plan Kitchen / Dining / Living area; and to gain another bedroom, try the loft if height is not an issue....Without seeing pictures of your house from outside, difficult to gauge how would a double storey side extension work for your house. Thanks for the replies. @Ellie I think my partner got the idea of a horizontal one from a one pitch roof photo on here. they do look really nice. @oneplan that's a really good point re lining up windows if they are horizontal. Although I think long horizontal ones is the builders last choice as he says they'll take longer to install. We're paying a day rate so trying to get everything pinned down in advance and as slick as possible. Our internal layout is slightly different to the floor plan I added to the comments. The kitchen is going in the centre in the 'old' extension (front of the house is Victorian and existing extension is 1990s). The new extension will have the sitting area on the left and the dining area on the right (so the opposite of the floor plan). This is because the wood burner will need to go on the left side and we want the seating area around that. Do you have any thoughts on narrow vehicle windows one on either side for the gable roof? I'll try to find the photo of what I mean. Thanks

Hi Will, can you confirm what this space will be use for? Is it going to be an open plan sittingroom/kitchen area? My reason for asking is, along with Akira's valid point it would be good to use the main sky light to zone an area. Are you planning to have kitchen units along the row of skylights for example?

Hi there, yes - that's correct - an open plan living/kitchen/dining area. At the moment I am not 100% sure of the layout of these areas - there is another thread I started in which I've posted up 4 possible layout suggestions.
