Window Colour Suggestions please

Hi all -

After some inputs please. After posting a couple months ago about types of windows to install, we've decided on bespoke wooden sash across the front and more contemporary (black) aluminum at the sides and rear (with crittall style french doors) where it's all open plan and more modern.

The question is what colour to paint the front sashes... right now we're favouring a matt black or dark grey to match the aluminium windows/doors or should we go something a bit more traditional?

The house is cotswold stone. The door will be changed for a reclaimed one at some point.

All suggestions and ideas welcome...

Or you could go for a lighter grey such as this! RAL 7015 Ultimate Rose sash windows.

For me the house needs white window frames. But each to their own! (We’re also having wooden sash windows to replace upvc on our Edwardian house.) Angie

Agreed, white window frames are perfect on the front of this (very handsome) house, and modern glasswork with black frames will look great on the back. And I’d go for quite an intense colour (a deep turquoise?) on the reclaimed front door, when you find one, with a white frame.

I think that is a double-track and they have a second, heavier curtain behind it. But even if they don't, I think that is what you should do for versatility and look. They actually have it built into the frame so it is hidden and super sleek, but I think you can achieve this look if you run it along where the angled ceiling meets the wall. I would take a picture of your room and what you like to John Lewis, or another high end store or specialist curtain maker and ask their advice for specifics. I was just trying to give you an idea that I hoped you would like! I'm sorry I can't be super specific, but I think you need to have these custom made to do justice to the room, the view, and to get exactly what you want.

Thanks. I used film in my last house in our bathroom. It's def effective and I had a design cut into it and it was often complimented. But for this room I'd like a window treatment. I want to see outside if I want to and it's the front of the house so want some curb appeal. What I'm struggling with is finding inspiration for cheap. Ideally it would be a custom blind that comes from them bottom as suggested but that's just not affordable right away so I'm just looking for other cheap ideas...

Looking at the floor and tiles I think a shade of taupe would look lovely, perhaps at the paler end. All the paint companies do shades of taupe so worth a look. F&B Purbeck Stone is lovely, or the paler Skimming Stone, in fact look at all their neutrals which are lovely. Little Green’s Slaked Lime is also lovely (last picture).

I’m unsure about the contemporary and traditional mix! I prefer the white to any black or dark grey, and fear that the darker colours will age very quickly. However I also think that a pale traditional stone colour would look amazing too! Little Greene colours are nice - and they have a newish colour card called Stone that has some gorgeous options.
Have you considered a coloured Crittall instead of the usual black? These doors are from the Devol Kitchen Instagram page - I think a slightly more muted colour would look incredible on your house!

Another vote for white frames. Definitely a no for Matt black and grey.

Thanks for the inputs. So if we didn’t go black, and we wanted to avoid a white, what would you suggest?

arc3d had the right idea! White has never been traditional (actually brilliant white is 20th century invention) Try Portland. A BS colour. Dulux Trade Eggshell Will do the trick!

I would try out virtually or just print a coloured photo onto normal paper and colour in the different ideas so you can see the results. I know it sounds a bit antiquated but I realy do find this is the only way to decide. The grey flashing and slate roof will give you a good guide as to the colour grey. I think the right grey would look very smart.

Oh and I'd blend the drainpipes in with the walls. They always look a bit of an eyesore to my mind when they're any other colour. They're not exactly meant to be a feature, just a necessity.

I’ve always favoured white for period homes although I really like bluey-greens too. However, on Escape to the Country a stone cottage had blue-grey windows and they looked amazing. Wish I could find a picture!

Personally, I need to see a strong contrast between the windows and the walls. Suzie's suggestion of trying out colours sounds very sensible (easy to do, even in MS Paint). And I wouldn't go for a matte finish, though silk would probably be okay.

Cut a few pieces of wood or cardboard into approx the size of one piece of window wood and try out some tester pots. Stand them up in front of the windows to check how they will look when you stand back. MUCH cheaper than getting it wrong and regretting it.

Thanks for all the inputs. Totally agree with the mocking up ideas, unfortunately we are away on holiday and had the needing of a colour decision the next day sprung on us so we couldn’t “test”.

We went with pigeon in the end 😬

Have never thought of painting the pipes a different colour to hide them. Will Definately be testing that idea - thanks !!

Either keep it classic with a white sash, or a matte white finish such as our 'Chalk White' or go dark such as these Anthracite grey sash windows below -
