colour scheme advice - its getting complicated!

Hello

I’m Trying to decorate a home office for my husband, with blue, yellow, grey and dark wood and brass! I feel it’s getting a bit over complicated now as having to work to his tastes and things that already exist that we aren’t changing. I was thinking that the blue, grey, yellow/brass work as the 3 colours and the dark wood is a neutral, so it still works? We have a rug which incorporates blue grey and yellow gold and black to bring it all together.

Oh and a lot of the furniture have black legs

but too complicated…?

We have extremely pale pink walls with cream curtains, and dark brown sofas and it works with light brown wood furniture. We have complimentary pale pink cushions and s few multicolour ones to add to it. It also helps if you make sure you have a bright bulb with a shade that helps. We have. A chandelier from next which really lights up the room when it gets dark. Keep me posted. Would love to help

Hi, this is going to be a great space! I really like your theme of brown/mustard/khaki, it's going to be so warm and contemporary. What about painting the wall with the two windows in your living space a rich ochre/mustard and repeating it on the opposite wall. There isn't a great expanse here as you have the walkway to the kitchen but it will reflect beautifully. With those big glass doors and roof light you can afford to go darker. The current mustard wall in the dining area, you could go for a fun, bold wallpaper with complimentary colours. It'll all tie in effectively but you'll have defined areas. Keep the remaining walls as they are and add accessories to bring the whole extension together. Thanks for both your comments. Those ideas are really nice Rachel. We have original parquet flooring in the hallway, so we will be keeping that and getting it sanded (which should make it lighter once the dark varnish is removed). The carpet will be going (I’m sure it was nice in its day!). We were originally planning on stripping back the stairs to have the wooden steps and a neutral/light carpet runner. However, there are so many layers of paint on the steps (some of which we believe is lead) so we won’t be able to strip back to the wood and are just going to repaint the stairs white and have the carpet runner like you mention. I have attached some more pictures of the hallway. The main dilemma, as you say @colourhappy, is choosing a combination of colours which feels welcoming – not too dark and not brilliant white! The areas we will need paint for are: Lower hallway panelling Walls above panelling in lower hallway Stairs and upper hallway wall Picture rail in upper hall Wall above picture rail in upper hall Woodwork (doors etc) There are lots of different areas so struggling to find the right combination!

it doesn’t sound too complicated if done in a nice way. perhaps post a picture of the rug and anything else that is staying, and let us know what new things you need to choose colour for

I would say blue, yellow, grey, dark wood and brass can go really well or not so much as it will depend on the exact tones you choose.

Since you are keeping some existing items, they will be your starting point - for instance, what dark wood are we talking about? Cherry can be considered a dark wood but it's got sometimes a redder undertone - which won't look as nice with brass - whereas a walnut wood has a soft purple undertone and go well with warm and cool tones. Masstone is the main colour pigment you see (brown) and the undertone is the subtle "tint" mixed into it. You could place a primary colour next to it to help you identify what is the dominant undertone of that particular brown; red, yellow or blue.

It would be helpful to do the same process with your rug, most likely than not all of the colours in that item will have a similar depth (the amount of white or black mixed into it) and a common undertone to all of them.

It may sound a little too complicated but it is quite straight forward and once you have more clarity on these factors, it will be then much easier to make confident colour decisions for the remaining items.

Keeping a consistent undertone is key to achieve a beautiful and cohesive look!

Ah! As for the finishes, brass and black I'd recommend keeping a 1/3 - 2/3 ratio to be safe.
