Layout help! How to seperate lounge area!

Hi, we are renovating a 1960's house. We would like to knock through kitchen to dining room to make a kitchen/diner but my husband thinks that having the lounge open plan also will be too messy/busy. We can't decide how to seperate the area without making the lounge too dark and also we use the conservatory as a playroom so it would be good to be able to see what the kids are doing whilst I'm cooking. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks

Consider moving the wc to the back of the garage and then make the front room your lounge and the back room a kitchen /dining /living space

This was actually plan A, however there is no drainage on that side of the house

Sneaky thing, not sharing the rug with us! But you're right, the colours are v difficult; the pink is wrong -- if it were terracotta I think it'd be great. The fireplace space: of course, if you have a millionaire to schmooze, a great piece of sculpture. My go-to instead of sculpture is tree branches, from the year's winter pruning. Not funny sticky things bought from a shop, something you find that you think is a beautiful shape, art from nature just as it is. In a floor vase with a narrow neck. Can you get out into the country, or a big park, at pruning time? A real branch can last pretty well forever, you don't need to do it every year.

Seems to me that you need to decide what you want to look at most and point the furniture towards that. You might find that with a long empty wall you might add a fireplace. You might prefer the view into the garden or you might prefer to have furniture facing each other to be sociable. Personally I would buy a long low unit for the wall where the doors used to be and have a nice TV. I would put a sofa opposite and the chairs or smaller sofa at each end

Hi Sandi You have a great space to work with, and a lot of ideas for the space itself which is a great start. Ideally it would be best to sit down with a Designer and really dig into what you want from the space, taking time to really figure out how you want the space to feel as a whole. However, to get you started it's easy enough to create a concept design plan of the space from plans you have of the home, so if you'd be interested I'd be happy to take a look at the plan for both the basement and lounge, and send you something over to give an idea of how the design could look / be laid out, based upon the information you've posted above. I agree with Serena. Looking at your plan an L shaped sofa in this room doesn’t appear to work especially because you have to negotiate around it to get into the room. I would leave the TV where it is and invest in a conventional sofa placed in front of the TV (closer than you have it now) and a single large armchair to its left. Place a coffee table between the TV and the sofa. Move the chair from behind the door to the wall between both windows and set a small table near it. Perhaps place a cabinet under the side window. Have you considered a window seat for supplemental seating? It would be a nice place to sit with a book.

This article suggests that digging new drains may not be as much as you think….. in your case you would also have to factor in the additional cost of repairing your side path after.

Have you considered full height sliding double doors in your thinking for opening up between the kitchen and diner/living? I have seen some that sit fully flat when fully open. Would allow for both ways of thinking about the space.
