Herringbone flooring beading

I have just had herringbone laminate installed in my new build and sadly had to go down the route of using beading as opposed to replacing the skirting. The flooring is excellent however i feel the beading finish has been rushed. Some of the joins aren’t perfect and there are even a couple of chips. It also looks unfinished around the door frames. Am i being unreasonable or has this been badly done?

Hi Yasmin,

That's great news you are pleased with your flooring but with regards to the beading I think I would be left feeling disappointed. Was the flooring installed by the housebuilder or by a third party company that you sourced yourself?

I would definitely be contacting them and sending these photos across as the finish isn't too a high enough standard.

Hi Barney, That sounds fab and I'm sure it will look beautiful. Just a quick comment on parquet / herringbone tiles after some recent experience on our renovation project, you probably know this already but I didn't and it ended up as quite an expensive learning for us; cutting tiles to a herringbone pattern is super time consuming! No problem if you get a fixed price upfront or are doing it yourself but having just had our new walk in shower tiled (2m x 1m) in a herringbone pattern I was astounded by how long it took and the complexity of all the 45 degree cuts! It looks stunning but I selected the tiles and pattern with aesthetics in mind and definitely with no comprehension of the cost implications :) Best wishes, Claire

I think I am right in stating that Spacia is the thinnest Amtico. As a result you can’t put additional strips to highlight individual planks. So in my opinion you should check whether you think that a normal straight pattern of laying gives you high end look you want or if it is so smooth that it could be mistaken for a cheaper product. I imagine you will feel that the herringbone will give more of a quality look.

I love a herringbone or chevron floor. Herringbones are good for making the room feel bigger as you’re eyes are drawn to the V rather than the end of the plank. Also good in kitchens as often there is very little pattern but maybe you have more in the dining area? What flooring is in the living room or hall? having said that I’m having the same debate myself. I’m putting Karndean down in my sons room and debating whether he’s worth the extra installation cost 😂

We have just put a reclaimed parquet floor in a herringbone pattern in our new open plan kitchen. Hasn't been sanded and finished but it is oak and floor will look more uniform and paler once the old varnish is removed . Kitchen units are kombu green (dark green), with pale quartz worktops. Wood will soften the room As you can see we have our old sofas in there at the moment. It is 50m2 Work in progress.

Thanks for the reply. i decided to send the photos across and theyve confirmed they will be baxk out tp rectify.

For my own knowledge, should beading have a the small nail pins visible or should they be filling these in? Also, is there a solution to the exposed mdf edge when the beading ends at doorways etc? ive tried looking online but can’t find much advice. TIA

Hi Yasmin,

I'm pleased they have got in contact and confirmed they will be out to rectify for you.

I am no expert on beading and laminate flooring however my understanding is that if a neat skirting to skirting finish cannot be achieved then either a 45 degree cut should be made and an adjoining piece should be fixed and connected to achieve a 'flush' run or otherwise there's something called 'quarter round' which is a type of return. (See attached picture as my explanation isn't the best).

With regards to installing, they can either be installed with a sealant/adhesive or pins. It depends on what the installer uses. No doubt the installer chose to use pins so the floor can 'breathe' woods of all types expand etc so it will allow for airflow which you most likely wouldn't get using an adhesive and sealant. If you feel the pins against the white are unsightly it would be worth checking with the installer to see what he suggests - it could be using a white enamel based paint to disguise or filler but this would depend on how far the pins go in and I personally wouldn't want to knock them in any further at the risk of causing damage.

They should mitre the ends so the trim butts up against the wall like in @The Kitchen Lady UK photos. Just looks like it was rushed. They should also mitre the joins rather than butt joining them which looks conspicuous.
