What colour are these paving slabs?

Hi, what colour the sandstone slabs used here? I'm torn between grey (not my first choice) and buff, but want it looking light not the yellow that shows on most pix. This looks a good neutral, thank you, Louise

Hi,

These were called a rippon buff, available from natural stone and timber. They are a sort of brown shade in colours. One of the nicest ones in our opinion too.

As i am sure you now know everyone calls the same thing something different so this may not be any help to you?

Thank you, this is really helpful. Ripon buff is what I've seen that seems to fit the bill.

Try pressure washing them first to see it you like them cleaned up. If you do want to change the look you can acid etch them or stain them- there are lots of how to videos online but basically you need to clean the slabs with a degreaser, apply your stain with a roller (or acid with a spray and 8-24 hours later a neutralizer), and then seal the finished product. There are options at the DIY store or online- personally I would be looking to buy a combined stain and sealer designed for concrete slabs.

They appear to be laid on a cement base that could be where the effort is required to shift them. Relaying them will initially involve removing any attached cement to allow for a flat even surface. But it’s definitely worth trying one and see what happens.

These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire.

Celine there are loads of porcelain finishes from the palest of white to wood effect and dark grey. I would avoid white as it could show the dirt a bit too much! Here’s some more images of porcelain. I don’t know what the paving is in your pics but possibly porcelain?

I would agree, they have enough subtle variation and offer a warmth in colour rather than the cold greys, blues of some other slabs.

Is this a diy job or are you using a contractor?

Just some advice from experience.

1, Watch the pointing compound that is used, sand and cement is always best. Little bit more time consuming but offers the best results if done properly by a LONG LONG way.

1, Do get the sandstone sealed as it will stain easily

Thank you. I'm using a contractor – I have asked for light pointing, does sand and cement dry dark and then fade? Sealing – yes, good advice, thank you.

Depends on gauge, type of sand and even type of cement used to be honest. It will always sit better with natural stone rather than these new compounds. Just to stress. last a lot longer too.

Do find out the exact compound they are using. There are a few around now. There are some that should be avoided depending on the laying method of the patio. This comes down to the type of base for the patio, the laying aggregate and gauge, the type of stone.

A lot of these compounds are brush in and permeable if they are not cement based. These recommend a gauge of 6:1 or less for the laying. Personally i dont think this is strong enough to withstand our climate, wet, frosty, sometimes hot. It will go through a lot. We always lay with grit on a 4:1 base. This gives longevity.

This makes the base no good for these compounds and you will find water sits in these joints and will stain the slabs and pointing.

The cement base ones will work but then a lot of them leave a sheen over the slab that will wear off in time but not great when you have just spent good money to have it laid professionally.

NOTHING beats sand and cement but i know a lot of contractors move away from it as it is not the nicest or easiest of methods but this sometimes sacrifices quality. In my honest opinion.
