1930s original fireplace tiles?

Hello, I'm hoping for a bit of insight into these fireplaces. They are in a 1930s house, and although I think the wooden mantelpieces are original, I've never seen anything like these tiles before. I am hoping they are not original as they are not to my taste. But after a lot of Google research, I am still unsure if they are original and whether removing them would be sacrilege! My plan is to keep the wooden sounds, remove the gas fires and to replace the tiles with nicer/modern ones. Thanks so much for any help!
