bedroom wardrobes dilemma

Hi I wonder if I could enlist the help of Houzzers?

I have had the same wardrobes for 20 odd years and now want to change the look of the room. Would you go for freestanding wardrobes or built in. The only problem I can see with built in is it would encroach on the bay window. Also keeping the fireplace but am open to suggestions.

Hey Rona, I was wondering if you could maybe a built in one on the left and then a free standing on the other so there's no issues around the window? you could always keep the one on the right and have it painted a different colour if you really didn't want to replace it with a new one, however if so maybe can think of the freestanding and built in same colours and similar design styles :) hope this helps

Thanks so much for your input what an unusual suggestion - I love it! The smaller wardrobe definitely needs to be changed as it’s a tad small.

Just a thought, what about putting the bed against the wall of the walk in wardrobe and you can still have your headboard, no need to change or move a radiator and the wife's side of the bed would be next to the wardrobe entrance. It's all a bit cramped by the looks of things and while you'll have your ensuite and your walkin wardrobe you'll still be walking into a box room. Another thought I had to to lose the bedside cabinets and increase the appearance of space would be in to have the bed side lights on the partition wall and the storage built into the stud wall with pull out shelves for those breakfast in bed moments and cups of tea. Change the door to open onto your landing as well!!! Good luck

Hello Leesh, It sounds like you rather like the idea of an en-suite and so I would perhaps suggest you go with it, rather than do one thing and then re-do it later. You mention the house has one single loo.. So would this mean presumably that you would also then situate a loo downstairs? If so perhaps you might consider turning the loo into a small wet room style shower room.. A wall hung loo and small sink would give you enough room for a small shower room fully tanked of course as they are lovely. If there is a bathroom with bath for example elsewhere on the upper levels then it could be one way of dealing with this smaller space.. Alternatively you may prefer to have a walk in closet.. Mind you.. If the bedroom is large enough you may be able to incorporate a walk in closet in the room itself.. I'm elaborating on your initial dilemma, but it may help you to decide just what you need and where exactly.. : ))

Hey Rona,

You could perhaps have floor to ceiling wardrobes on both sides but have the rhs one built at an angle? Hope that helps :)

I’ve got built in wardrobes and the wonderful thing is that can be built to suit the room. They are bespoke so certainly get advice from the fitter.

You could have a narrower wardrobe on the left and a few corner shelves to connect it the wall where the window is. It would be great if your carpenter can match the details from your skirting board and paint it in the same colours you have on the walls as well x

That’s a great idea also was thinking of a built in on the left and a vintage chest of drawers on the right but may look odd?

I think that’s what I would do, have double hanging space in the left alcove with freestanding drawers on the right (balance the height difference with art, lamp etc). i have seen pictures of (but failed to find!) a slim wardrobe finishing with a bench seat or dressing shelf going into the window however not sure if the alcove is wide enough for that?

i do also like the current set up, a change of handles and colour could make you love them again!

Thanks Minnie I’ve been searching the internet for an image I think it could work. My husband who has the smaller of the wardrobes (and more clothes than me) says he needs more hanging space! Not sure sharing a wardrobe will solve the problem hehehe! Hand painted a different wardrobe before but I didn’t get a good result!

I think so too, they don’t need to be identical alcoves just balanced.

lol, I know the feeling! My husband uses a cupboard on the landing and with double rails it gives him 9ft of hanging space, you’ve obviously got the height to do that too and keep a smaller section partitioned off for a full length rail for dresses etc if needed

This is the only picture I’ve found so far. I think vintage could look lovely, we got a georgian chest a couple of years before ”brown” furniture came back in fashion but i was looking the other day for some reason and prices appear to be back down again

Thanks exactly the look - thank you! I actually love mismatched furniture much more interesting. Yes the secret is to balance it out but I fail miserably on my fireplace not the one in the picture but in living room.

i know its very boring and you know anyway but I’d measure out all your hanging requirements including length and how much drawer storage youneed before getting the carpenter in!
