choosing wall paint for living room

This forum has been very helpful in decorating my house. I would like to paint my walls in neutral colors most likely Dulux do you mind suggesting some colors that would go well with the furniture and the wood flooring for east west long living room.

Hi Sam, I have a colour palette here for you attached and thought you might like one of the ones I've circled for you? I thought they may go with the room the most after seeing the colour and texture of the sofa also. since there are a lot of wood I see in the picture and some blacks, they can literally go with anything colour wise but with the sofa I thought maybe one of those colours would go really well with the room? maybe could even add a second one to the room if you felt that would look better! has this given you a better idea?

Well, one rule is that a wall with a window in it is often the darkest wall (if one of four walls). This might make you want to paint the window wall(s) lighter? (Depending on window size.) Also, you need to identify which walls you want to grab people's attention. These would presumably be the natural focal points at each end? You might want to paint the shorter(?) opposite walls, i.e. the one at the dining end and the one at the living room end, in bold eye-catching colours? Then perhaps use expansive and more 'neutral' light colours on the remaining longer (?) walls. However, it's very hard to visualise without the layout or pics... My ideas / suggestions may not relate at all to the layout or light sources! Good luck!

hi all, as promised (or threatened ?!) here are the photos of my new fireplace. I am still not convinced that the wallpaper on the chimney breast is right and we are thinking of just repainting the whole area white/offwhite. (The carpet and curtains are new). the red in the previous photo above is what was on the wall pre-installation and i was hoping to replicate that, but could not find a plain red paper anywhere! so have gone with red curtains instead. any advice regarding replacing the stripy paper welcome !! thankyou

Well it looks like a nice bright room so I guess you have so many choices it can get overwhelming. For wallpapers I can recommend John Lewis's own especially if you don't want to spend a lot. If you like the mustard yellow (I do) there are lots of papers which could tie in to it. Would probably be too much as a solid colour wall. II'm sure others will come along with some better ideas...

Hi Susannah, I would advise you to get samples pots of all your choices and paint the relevant walls (large areas and in corners to check colours in shadow too). Make sure you judge the effect of each colour on the other in the room. Best wishes, JNSQ

We've used loads of their paint and its lovely. Rich deep colours. The neutrals are fab. We used Koala Bear, Blackbirds Egg and Teardrop. Let me know if you need photos.
