Help! How to modernise / increase curb appeal on my 1970s dormer house
Comments (16)Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? It may be an idea to sketch out various options (with colour!) to see what you like then get quotes on the various options http://linleydevelopments.co.uk/portfolio/bungalow-to-a-chalet-style-conversion/#prettyPhoto[portfolio]/1/...See Morewhat colour, White or grey windows? Help updating 1970s exterior
Comments (24)We have a very similar style of house and are also torn between playing it safe with white or light cream upvc windows to brighten the exterior or being a little more adventurous choosing grey. We are also having to replace all guttering, soffits and fascia ( we have 3 dormers to front and 3 at the back) so we are wondering about combining grey window frames, guttering and soffits with white fascias and white front door and white garage door. We are also supposed to decide by tomorrow but I am worried that getting it wrong will be a massive disappointment every time arrive home! i wish there was some way to "photoshop" the options onto an image of our house. Sorry not to offer any constructive advice but I found it reassuring to find another house owner struggling with a decision just like me!...See MoreExterior styling of 1970s house (windows and doors)
Comments (8)Hi Greg, I think the windows definitely need to change. Casement does seem like a good option as it gives you more glass and are affordable. You could go for some powder coated aluminium to match the garage? but this is a much higher price. The door is a nice touch and I personally like them but it really depends on the style you are going for with your interiors (and exteriors) and whether this is in keeping with that. Is it something you need? and if not.. will it really support the style you are going for? I think it is hard to give too much advise because I don't really know what you are trying to achieve at this point. If you are having trouble visualising your space, I offer a great 3D package will give you a chance to see what different options will look like before you make any costly purchases. Comments (7)Hi Ciara I love the idea of full height doors for the garage conversion but would consider the practicality of it, think about where the desk will go. It will not add to pavement appeal if the desk is against the glass and you can see the messy bits that tend to gather under a desk. Crittal style steel windows are exorbitantly expensive, but I agree with Jonathan the house lends itself to multi paned windows. You might want to look at good quality PVC options. I would suggest the roof gets a jet wash as the green moss should come off and reveal the colour of the roof....See Morecarocat24
