Love the radiator - that slight angle will make drying towels a reality as opposed to a pipedream!

What do people look for when visiting a bathroom showroom?

Hi Dave, I've just designed a kitchen showroom with 14 displays - not bathrooms I know but I had to go through the same thought process, ie 'what do people want to see and what do we want to show them they haven't seen before'. I'm going to apologise in advance if any of what I'm about to say is patronising, you're in the trade after all so you know what sells, but if I was designing a bathroom showroom I would include displays with free standing and fitted furniture. I'd showcase your storage solutions - vanity units, cupboards, cabinets etc. I'd include wall alcoves in shower enclosures and wet room displays and light them up to show people what can be done. I would include different wall cladding options - large tiles, small tiles, acrylic panels and tongue and groove (not wet areas obviously!), and different flooring options - tiles and vinyl. I'd do a mix of traditional and contemporary and different budgets. Dressing the bathrooms so they look like actual rooms is important too and if budget is limited a few nice accessories is better than lots of cheap stuff. Hope this is actually useful

Whether you have a huge bathroom in a country house or a small bathroom space in a town centre apartment there will be an ideal bathroom design for you out there. From a s step back in time to traditional ‘heritage style’ bathrooms to uber-modern cutting edge new styles we have it covered. Here is our take on the top 5 bathroom trends for 2017. 1.Traditional Styles are back Period style bathrooms are becoming increasingly popular with large freestanding roll-top style baths taking centre stage and setting a grandiose theme. Carefully selected period fittings will add a glorious touch of heritage inspired luxury. With this exciting bathroom trend your bathroom will be endowed with a timeless elegance, creating the perfect space for relaxing body and mind. This style need not be confined to older period houses – it can work equally well in a newly built home. The trend for traditional styles has also been reflected in the fashion for traditional paint colours and Edwardian / Victorian tile styles. Muted greys, greens and soft blues are highly popular right now and can complement the bathroom furniture beautifully. Lighting is really important to get right. The right lighting can make a huge difference to the overall ‘look and feel’ of your bathroom. Many bathrooms often have a poor source of natural light so mirrored surfaces and shiny high gloss finishes can boost the available natural light and making smaller bathroom spaces seem larger and inviting. 2.Reflected Glory – Shine bright like a diamond Sparkling, high gloss finishes are growing fast in popularity. With the right lighting they can really give your bathroom a spacious, bright feel. Mirrored and coloured glass, reflective wall panels and tiles, and high-gloss furniture and bath panels are popular light-enhancing materials used in bathrooms. Tiles are a natural and traditional choice for bathroom walls and floors and they are available in a bewildering choice of sparkling, glossy finishes. For an ultra-modern style you should look at smooth, handle-free high-gloss fitted bathroom furniture . Keeping furniture off the floor and using wall-mounted cabinets makes the look even more contemporary. Large mirrors and chandelier style lighting can add drama and a touch of luxury to your bathroom creating a real “wow” factor. Feature a Feature Wall Feature walls have become ‘a thing’ in 2016 and they can be applied to the bathroom just as much as to a lounge or bedroom. Use a “statement piece” of furniture, or dramatic tiling or a large ornate mirror or some other piece of wall art to bring attention and interest to an otherwise bland wall space. Let there be Light – as long as it’s the right light. The right lighting scheme will maximise the impact of glossy reflective surfaces. Thoughtful use of downlighters can cast elegant pools of light over selected surfaces and recessed LEDs placed behind glass will deliver a diffused, gentle light just ideal for this long unwinding soaks in the bath. 3.Back To Nature There is a real interest in more natural materials such as wood and stone. There is a real trend for “bringing the outside inside”. Wood and stone can add real character to your bathroom. They can also complement the sleek lines of modern bathroom. Stone tiles are a natural choice and can be used on walls and floors. Basins and baths carved from stone can add to the natural theme. You can add natural characteristics to your bathroom with wood panelling and as a bonus it will help to retain heat in the bathroom as wood is an excellent insulator. Tongue and groove is ideal for enhancing the heritage theme. For modern themes consider large panels of wood-effect composite. If real wood and stone are pushing the budget too far there are excellent choices available in stone or wood effect materials and it’s becoming increasingly hard to distinguish the natural from the manufactured. Metals are also becoming trendy again with brass, copper and rose gold making being favourites for fittings and trims. 4.For Dramatic Effect Convention – what convention? Increasingly we are seeing free thinking in the bathroom space with the use of solid, intense colours and bold, uber-trendy patterns. Glitzing up plain white ceramics is becoming a popular thing. This year’s colours are elegant and rich – think rich aubergines, deep blues and powerful, impact greys. You need to be careful though – especially in a smaller bathroom as the colours can overwhelm the space so if you are going to incorporate a bold colour or two consider using them in single blocks. You can also introduce vibrant colour via high-gloss lacquered storage cabinets and coloured-glass or by selecting strikingly coloured wall tiles, you won’t be short of choices here. 5.Simply Showers Recreating the Spa- like theme has seen a rise in bathrooms without baths – just showers. This often frees up space in the bathroom for additional furniture and storage options – or it can be left simply as free space for an expansive open look. We are also seeing “invisible edged” shower screens growing in popularity. Unlike metal-edged alternatives “invisible edge” shower screens add an ultra-modern touch. Before and After for a young London couple, who moved up North!

If ever there was a case study to affirm a company’s total commitment to customer service, it has to be Heart of Your Home Kitchens and young London couple James and Sam. Having lived and worked in the capital for 10 years, Sam, whose parents live in the Ribble Valley, and James decided it was time to relocate: “While we loved living and working in London we never intended to bring up a family there,” says James. The couple began their search for a new home three years ago and discovered, and bought, a 1960s stone-built, detached home near Ilkley in Yorkshire last summer. Still both working in London, the task of refurbishing the property was made all the more tricky as they were unable to oversee the work. First up was the kitchen, which needed remodelling and replacing, as James explains: “The units were totally outdated and we wanted to alter the layout too by knocking down an archway to open up the space.” While looking for cabinetry the couple had seen the 1909 collection in London and online, where they spotted Heart of Your Homes Kitchens in Waddington, run by Katie Green. “We visited Heart of Your Home Kitchens and met Katie on one of our trips to Lancashire and we thought the showroom was amazing!” recalls James. “We had also been talking to a local supplier in Yorkshire, so we had a bit of a dilemma but when we spoke to Katie she was so enthusiastic and engaged with the whole project that we commissioned Heart of Your Home Kitchens.” The couple, who by this time were expecting their first child, asked Katie to project manage the re-modelling of their kitchen, which included 1909 base and wall cabinetry in Partridge Grey and Porcelain, a larder, cleverly recessed ceiling and lighting, a Villeroy and Bosch Belfast sink, Chicstone worktops in Amani White finish, Neff appliances including full-length fridge and freezer, microwave, oven, warming drawer, induction hob and a super-efficient ceiling extractor that doesn’t obstruct the view of the lovely gardens – something that Sam and James were keen to avoid. “The computerised visuals that Katie produced were far and above the best we have seen. She added so much detail right down to the position of the spotlights,” says James. When Heart of Your Home’s experienced craftsmen started work on the kitchen and newly-created utility, Katie visited the property regularly so she was able to send James and Sam almost daily updates on the progress. “Katie went totally beyond what we expected. She always responded quickly to emails and any queries we had and she regularly sent us photos of the kitchen. She even sent us photos of the other rooms that were being refurbished when she visited the property!” While everything appeared to be going smoothly with the long-distance refurbishment, Sam and James were in for an unexpected surprise amidst their busy project – the arrival of their new baby! Six weeks early and weighing just under 5lbs, all the attention turned to the new arrival. Meanwhile Katie concentrated on getting the kitchen complete, on time and on budget. “She was just super-helpful,” says Sam. “She was really on top of everything, very proactive and never left anything to chance.” “We lead very busy lives and when we were in London it was just so good to have such a great communicator. When we sent an email Katie would respond quickly and efficiently, which is really valuable, especially in the situation we were in.” “We had a limited amount of time and even then, Katie willingly accommodated any changes we made. She really took ownership of the whole room – not just the cabinetry but the layout, lighting and all the practical details.” The result is a beautiful cooking, dining and living space for this new family, who were delighted to move in last month. Commenting on the project, Katie of Heart of Your Home Kitchens, says: “When James and Sam commissioned me it offered the ideal opportunity to deliver on my business concept – ‘Personalised, quality kitchen design and installation’. “Planning and installing the ideal kitchen and living space for a client demands building a close working relationship with them. It also requires a great deal of consultation to completely understand their exact requirements and lifestyle.” “It was a pleasure to work with James and Sam and I am so pleased that they are delighted with their Heart of Your Home 1909 kitchen. It is so satisfying and absolutely brilliant when everything comes together perfectly.”
