Help with how to tile downstairs loo!

Hello, just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on how best to tile our new downstairs loo! As you can see it's a toilet/sink vanity unit under the window. Appreciate the builder still needs to do a lot of work around the window but we're not sure whether to tile the whole of the wall, out just half way, or just just the bit round the sink. Then whether to have a proper window sill or tile this area as well? We won't have too much budget left 😩 which makes it extra challenging in trends of tiling costs!

I’d be tempted to add a painted or mirror or wood shelving to the left and right instead of tiling. To give you somewhere for soap and a plant and bits etc - keep to the window top for a finish point - well, it’s an idea ?! Please see very awful sketch. ! Sorry about that !! ( on my phone )

Hello folks! I haven't disappeared, just had whooping cough (yes, seriously!) with a garnish of gastric flu and torn muscles from coughing fits. So that has severely impeded our efforts (hubby's had it too, and it lasts around 3mths so we're not out of the woods yet!) with our new house (which I now describe as semi-derelict before we bought it) and so had no time/mental energy to properly get updated on what's been happening with you guys. Truth be told, I've started reading a few times & either got interrupted (mummy-ness) or fallen asleep, without finishing. I've missed this, but u guys, esp Monica & RoRo have been in my thoughts. Where to start?! I think I've taken in all that's happened in this thread since I went AWOL but might have missed some finer points. Monica, I'm so sorry to hear what u'v been through, with the RTA & the cowboy tiling / wallpapering on top! (& work always picks worst times to intensify - I just started on a Task Force this week, when shd really still be on sick leave). I mean, a marker?! Seriously?! Isn't it common knowledge / common sense to use a lightly applied pencil? Sounds like u r doing best thing by looking at it as a learning experience. Still, he deserves an honest review somewhere. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll look at the lounge link when I've finished this post. BTW I LOVE your artwork. Vivacious, bright and deep - is there an insight there? ;-) And RoRo, wow you've got a lot on your plate! We've been so frustrated with being held back on our projects by health, but u have taken on a bigger scale of project altogether, sounds like it's verging on municipal! U guys inspire me. :-) Thinking of starting a thread on our living room, it's the most 'civilised' room of the house so far, but I didn't take the north-facing position into account when I decided on a colour scheme of turquoise, grey and lime. (Doh!) So far I've made some headway on a concept I'm excited by, but it needs some tweaking so it doesn't feel 'cold' with the blue tone of the natural light. Are you up for sharing some of your thoughts on this??? Hope so. :-)

Clever lighting is a must for small spaces - for a fun element here commission a neon word or phrase and have some low level floor wash - all on dimmers - dimmer switches placed outside bathroom door.

Because it’s the littlest room in the house you wouldn’t be alone if you made a bolder choice than in bigger rooms. And I like those tiles. If however the objective is to make the room seem larger then generally larger patterns help. If it were mine I would choose a wood floor tile, so that I could have stripes of wood across the width of the room (thereby visually widening it), I would also add an upstand of floor tiles (kinda size of skirting board) all around the room to trick your eye into thinking the floor (and therefore the room) is bigger. And I would paint the walls and ceiling the same colour as this warms up little rooms and it also helps corners to disappear (again making the room appear bigger). You might also consider getting mirror cut for the door panels (I prefer a grey or bronze mirror) If you really love pattern I would buy a stretched artists canvass and paste your favourite wallpaper to it and hang it like art.

I know, I hate having a horrible garden! Ah,thank you 😊 I must admit I’m avoiding the garden atm, it’s a slug fest, my husband has to frisk the dog every time she comes in as she’s brought in a couple on her coat 🤢 Ah ok, I’m not sure of the shortest projection, I know 650 is easy to get, but if you went for a 450 deep sink by whatever wide that should be do’able. Another option is the loo in the corner and have them both on the same wall, should gain 130mm standing room (?]. Can the mop not stay in the hall or do you want that storage for coats etc? (or can you buy folding mops??) 😂 it will be nice to have something pretty at the end of the hall I agree although it is a very nice vanity! hmmm, you’ve actually caught me mid decor 😂 The stairs are being painted next week and adding a runner (or saving for), new lights on order, looking for new bench etc as will move that one elsewhere

Thumbs up for the shelving @OnePlan! Thinking about your window cill, it's likely to get wet due to proximity to the tap. So I'd go for something which is not going to deteriorate in the water. Tiles are not the only answer for that - I love Lakeland Green Slate but depending on your location and budget that may not be feasible. I've also had a lot of success with Corian/similar in these sorts of locations - try ebay for off cuts. For my own bathroom I ended up visiting a guy with a garage full of odd pieces and just chose my preference! The benefit of this over stone is that is can be cut with the same tools a joiner uses to cut wood (as long as they are sharp) which makes it easier. It's about 12mm thick so you could potentially add a little vertical upstand under the window, and then take it up the wall a little behind the basin as well to protect the wall there.

Sorry, but the basin is too close to the adjacent wall. Does the door go to floor level? If so, you won't be able to open it when skirting boards are fitted. If you can open it, the handle will be hitting the wall.

Tile the windowcill to protect it from water.

dont use skirting boards, instead use some of the flooring cut to the height of a skirting board, it makes it look more cohesive, paint the cut edge at the top the same as the wall.

add some colour into the room to make it pop. use a really strong colour, dulux logo blue for example. paint the wall round the window that colour with soft sheen paint - good coats, buy from a proper decorators, or dulux own stores, use Valspar mix your own, if buying from B&Q, the paint quality is completly different to the Dulux / Crown etc you buy off the shelf at any of the big retailers.

this will make the job ”complete.” if in time you fancy tiling then you can do it when you have the money to do so.

if you buy 3 mixer pots of the same colour at B&Q of the Valspar it gives you 1 litre for £12, enough to paint that area….
