Help with door frame repair!

I've stripped the paint off the door frame and underneath is this monstrosity! It's all lumpy and stands out like a sore thumb under the paint. How can I get it to look similar to the design of the wood?

Chip is all out then decide what to do.
Personally I would get a joiner to either replace that bit of wood or the whole architrave

I'm inclined to replace it as well but the other half doesn't want to, not sure why seeming as we've replaced the whole of the skirting board! We're doing everything ourselves and are newbies!

My personal opinion, and what I've done in my home, is to use the same white for all the trim. The exception might be in a kitchen, living and dining room that has a more traditional feel and is already stained. If you are going with white ceilings, then in my opinion it looks best if they are uniform to start with. You can change that out room by room later if you want.

they didn't do the job they quoted for. they should have consulted with you before changing approach. mastic would have been a 5 min job.

Thanks, this was suggested by a builder. No not an estate, just a regular village road, all different kinds of houses from different years. Just 2 pairs of semi council houses which are more of a cottage style. All the downstairs is beamed, although a lot have been covered over the years. And the stairs run along the front wall if that makes sense? It was built with an upstairs bathroom with no loo, and the loo downstairs although I understand that’s not unusual for council houses of this age.

Hi Laura, I think they can work as long as the styles are similar. I have worked on a home design with white windows and a brown front door, worked beautifully. I would go for the black frame and door.

The amount of filling, sanding and priming, surely it's more economical to replace the architrave, it would look crisper and better?
