Paint colour indecision!

Hi, I’m about to repaint my south facing living room which also has a small west facing window. I have Dulux polished pebble everywhere else in my house but it has blue undertones which I’d like to avoid this time. The room has high ceilings and is a decent size.

I want to make it feel bright and airy but also warm. I was considering Dulux Pebble shore or Egyptian Cotton but I think they might be too dark on all 4 walls and I don’t want a feature wall. My other option is Dulux Swansdown (needs to be mixed) but as it’s just a shade lighter than polished pebble I’m worried it will have a blue undertone to it.

Any suggestions? Pictures are welcome. All the pictures I see online look like they’ve been through a filter and much brighter than the testers I have. Needs to be durable paint as I have 4 kids!

I think aspect makes all the difference to the colour in a room. I have Polished Pebble in my bedroom and it looks a bit lilacy as it is a north east facing room but I do like it. I assume you have painted some card to try it in different positions? Do you like green at all? It will look less blue. Something like Tranquil Dawn or F&B Cromarty. The colours you’ve tried are very similar.

Hi, I haven’t thought about a green. I’ll have a look online at Tranquil Dawn. Thanks for the suggestion. X

Thanks for all your comments! I am adding a few more photos to show the whole space we have to work with. It's a large area, approx 100square metres. The opposite end to the kitchen will have large dining table near the bifolds and the other side will be sofa/tv area. We're happy to keep the rest white and brighten it up with pictures and stuff, I just think a colour behind the units would look better than white. We've looked at Farrow&Balls Elephants breath and Green Blue since I've last been on here. Bearing in mind what we choose may dictate furniture choices for the other end.

My favourite is the purple velvet. I'm a bit confused on sofas. Is the Chesterfield in another room and you're now using that instead of the leather one currently in the lounge? Would you also get the stone one in the latest picture? I don't think that shade of purple will date. In terms of paint colour it's hard to know if I'm looking at the right colour on google but it appears to be quite a cool grey. Would something like Egyptian cotton work better? It looks as if the purple sofa would work with the rug. As both the leather and purple sofas are dark I would lighten with cushions and a throw. Perhaps a moss shade would work for an accent colour? (Or a deeper shade of mustard that's on the shop pic)

With such a neutral sofa, most styles and colours would suit this room! A mid-century style statement chair would look great in a teal (or other) colour and really lift the room :) As mentioned above, a velvet or textured weave would add a lovely texture to the space as well.

Be brave, and go dark! Often people are scared to as they think it makes a room smaller but actually it can have the opposite effect. Blurring the finishing lines of the room can give the illusion of more space, and if the space isn't particularly bright anyway, embrace it! Feature lighting - LED strips under the vanity, or wall lights - can really come into their own in moodier spaces too - don't underestimate the power of lighting :) For the backsplash, bring in a mosaic, or perhaps to continue the natural look, check out a few textured tiles like below - they have less grout to maintain but still offer a nice contrast: If you need a hand or any assistance with supply of products, advice, or design, check us out if you're local to Surrey or South West London :) - Adam
