Space for toilet?

I read somewhere that we should have 800mm width for a toilet, so whilst planning out the renovation of our bathroom, I couldn't make the sizes on my plan work. So I measured how much space our current toilet has and it's only 700mm. This hasn't knowingly ever been an issue for us, so is there any reason not to keep the 700mm as we dont have the space for 800mm? Thanks

I can't say for regs if there are any, but I wouldn't go narrower than the door into the room.

Widths are just recommendations, so 700mm will be fine (same as mine).

Hi I am seeking advice with the layout in a shower room. My main bugbear is the step up to the shower and the size of the shower. I would like to remove the step and accommodate a larger shower. Option 1- A 1700 shower low profile tray with 1400 glass screen and walk in opening. Option 2 - A 1400 low profile shower tray with sliding doors. This would leave a space of 300 between the shower and wall where the radiator is. It’s been suggested to me that this is wasted space. The toilet will be wall hung short projection. Colour scheme neutral/ stone/pale grey.Black towel radiator. My questions are 1 what are pros and cons of each option? 2 Is it ok to have the towel radiator within the shower area.? 3 Will the current layout of vanity unit / shelving make the room look too crowded? 4 Would a wall hung vanity/ basin work with floating shelves either side. Shelves are 26cm deep and counter top 32 cm. I am struggling to find a unit I like to fit. I don’t like the compact units where the tap is on the side. 5 Tile the whole room or just the shower area? 6 use same tiles wall and flooring? Any input/ suggestions would be gratefully received. One needn't necessarily "compromise" between bath and shower here; they're not entirely trivial to find but a small number of manufacturers make _square_ (or at least, near-square / wide) shaped bathtubs (Japanese soaking tub style) at about 120cm width. I've found: https://www.livinghouse.co.uk/acatalog/square-lounge-bath.html https://www.omnitub.co.uk/products/omnitub-duo-plus Such make a very luxurious bath (if money's no object, even a whirlpool / steam shower setting) while also providing more than ample space for great showering. Yes, you'd probably need to have some small steps built to enter the bath. And a concern would only be whether the floor is strong enough (when used as a bath, it makes a difference whether there's 300l or 150l water in the tub). Diagonally-installed corner baths may also be an option (quite a bit cheaper), something like: https://victoriaplum.com/product/orchard-wharfe-corner-bath-1200-x-1200 which would also allow a better shower experience than a 70cm-wide standard bath. Not as deep as a soaking tub / wouldn't need steps. If going for something like that, I would actually "box-off" the corner and turn it into shelving for storage, so the bath turns into a bit of an "enclosed niche", something like: I wouldn't go for a freestanding bathtub; the narrow spaces would make it challenging to clean.

having the toilet on the opposite wall doesn't work as there's not enough clearance to get onto toilet (between corner of sink and toilet) - and I think it's even more awful for someone to walk in on you from the side if you're on the loo, even if you're behind a door - but that's my own nightmare scenario! having the toilet below the window means that you will be standing right in front of toilet when standing at the sink on the right (which I don't like unless it's absolutely necessary - that would definitely be the husband's sink). having the toilet beside shower means there's space to the side of the toilet when standing at sinks, which seems like the best option to me. but it's your house and you need to think about what's most important to you - not seeing toilet immediately you open the door or having more space around it. I'd also try to line up the doorway with the space between toilet and sinks, so that it's not directly in front of toilet.

Query - why does the back wall of your shower have a slanted bit at the bottom? Is there something behind that, and under your storage area, that would mean you can't use all that back wall? If there's nothing there, and no problem with that corner, then: 1 - You could leave the bath where it is. Upgrade the panelling around the base and maybe put a little door in the panelling for under bath storage of cleaning stuff etc. Maybe even upgrade the bath itself too? And then move the loo to the back left corner, facing the window. Move the basin closer to the new loo position, and further away from the door, and build a low storage 'wall' all along that side wall, with the basin on it, and the loo also. The top of that new 'wall' will be a shelf for putting nice candles etc. Then, mirror all across that side wall, above the shelf, to increase the light and spaciousness. This is what we had in our tiny bathroom. It's more linear looking, with the main items on opposite sides of the room. 2 - Move the bath to horizontally across that back wall as you suggested - if space allows for the length of the bath. I think there will be enough space for a shower, even with sloping ceiling. Try standing up in the bath, and see if there is room above the tallest person's head. If you attach a pump to the shower, you will have enough power for a good shower. Maybe use mirror type tiles on the back wall above the bath to reflect light, and increase space. Move loo further into the room. Consider putting basin beside loo if there's enough room now, under the window and connecting them both, with a similar streamlined idea to above. This will square out the room a bit, leaving central space. You will also have a little space then on the left side where the sink was. Maybe a towel ladder could go there, or nice storage basket for loo rolls etc. 3 - Go and talk to Carolina in the Tubs & Tiles in Sandyford, in Dublin. She's amazing, and is a qualified architect, so she really understands space. She re-did our tiny bathroom. It looks amazing and has already won a prize! We took out the bath for a walk in shower. Which is my next suggestion to you! Even if you have small toddlers etc - you can always get a big plastic basin for baby bathing for a couple of years, and leave it in the shower. We left the sink and loo along the left side, and they're connected with the type of shelf I mentioned above. Good luck!

I may be wrong but I think changes/updates made to your home have to adhere to the most up to modern regs. Best to ask your local councils building control office!
