Glass box extension

We would like to build a glass box extension , we already having planning permission. it will be glass box all around, we will remive bifold doors to create more soace to kitchen area, boundary wood fence is 1 meter away from proposed glass box, does the glass need to be fire rated?

I think it will be more important for building regs for your glass room to be thermally efficient- in which case you need a company who specialise in this and can demonstrate it’s u value.

Separately- if the extension looks on one side to a fence why spend the money on all glass. Given a glass extension costs twice the money to build than a brick built extension with lots of glazing why not build at least some brick?

Horses for courses here I think. Where an extension to a traditional building is at rear ground level, I have no strong preference as between traditional materials, conservatory, or glass extension - and am planning a glass extension to the back of my Victorian house. Once you get higher up, or with something visible from the road, then I am strongly in favour of the traditional look with as much care as possible being taken to make the extension look as if it was always part of the building. I am aware that "reproduction" is sometimes considered a rude word, and also of the school which considers good modern design in an extension preferable to reproduction, and tends to equate glass with good modern design. In my view, that is not always the case. As a rule of thumb (but subject to the requirements of the particular site), I would prefer to see modern design in clearly visible extensions to older buildings confined to larger, usually non-domestic, sites.

Hi there, I don't know the details but could you not work around the problem by using a fire suppression system? Water mist etc? If you use a system like this and separate the ground floor glazed element with a wall and fire door this should satisfy the fire officer and consequently building control? That way you may not need fire rated glass possibly? To be honest your architect should have foreseen this eventuality and designed it out.

From the first two photos I was confused by the different looking ‘boxes’ where they almost seem to be from two different houses. Now it all makes sense, seeing it in context. To my layman’s eyes it looks like a very well executed project. Expensive? I think I know the answer... :-)

I agree.with Jonathan re the brick wall. We replaced a conservatory with an orangery and changed the side facing a fence with a wall including one window. This wall faces west and we wanted the evening sun and through ventilation. All windows, sliding doors and roof are top spec for thermal efficiency and it has made a brilliant addition to our home.
