Lighting Design Dilemma

Spot light rim colour

Hello!

We are doing major renovation and are coming to a point where we need to sort out the lighting and order spot lights. The overall design in the house will be modern and light. I am looking for opinions here - what rim colour spotlights do you think would suit best - white rim or chrome rim?

I am grateful in advance for your views.

always white, assuming you will have a white ceiling. you shouldn't try to draw attention to the spot lights rim, it's not a feature to highlight in a room.

Your designer has tried to achieve a regular arrangement of the lights in relation to the room. There's often a conflict between what might look most balanced in the space and the most practical positions for lights. You should discuss the options with him/her. We usually position spotlights / downlights just in front of the edge of the countertop, so some of the light goes into the base units. We avoid a light directly over the sink, since you're usually casting a shadow over the sink. Here, the lights over the countertop appear to be very near the wall, perhaps to enliven the wall surface with scallops of light.

Hi Ryan, Not terribly easy to understand the room from the partial panoramic - can you take a couple of normal views from different ends of the room? I would certainly look to replace all the lighting, and try to tie it together with common "themes" of shape and/or colour/finish. The bar seems rather incongruous - if you wish directional, task lighting from that position, I'd probably look for a more shaped (disc-shaped?) fitting with 3 or 4 directional lights, then pick up styles/ shapes/colours that tie in. Have a good browse here on Houzz for some inspiration, or have a look at Wayfair who always have a wide selection of well-priced lighting options.

Lighting is a very under estimated dimension within a design. It enables you to create several different moods in the same room, shaping your emotional response and adding another texture. Recently we've had lots of interest in the new innovation in smart lighting by Philips so we thought we'd give you the low down on what Hue, personal wireless lighting is all about. In a nutshell Hue is a lighting system which enables you to control your home lights. Whether you are looking to create a specific mood, control the ambience in a room, create a party atmosphere, add an extra dimension to movies, gaming, and music, or enhance your home security, all can be achieved with the power of smart control. The Hue system seems to have limitless possibilities! "Philips Hue is your personal wireless lighting system that lets you easily control your light and create the right ambience for every moment." With a wide product range from starter kits, bulbs, light strips, spots, recessed, lamps, indoor and outdoor, controls and even portables you configure and customise the lighting system to suit your needs. What's more, as the bulbs work with any standard light socket (wall, ceiling or lamp) you won't necessarily need an electrician, keeping you fully in control. The technology enables you to control the lights with the Philips Hue app and third-party apps. You can even connect this lighting system to iPhone/iPad Siri voice controls, your Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit for a truly automated experience. A simple search will highlight a range of prices from the best known online stores. Once the bulbs are installed, the bridge attached to the hub and everything connected via the app, then the fun can start! Home Automation If you already have a home automation such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit you can use voice controls to change your lights bringing a little bit of the future to your present day! If it's more than a simple "Alexa switch the lights on" command this may need a little bit of patience to set up. Enhance your music, viewing, movies and gaming! You can add a whole new level and create immersive viewing and gaming where your home lights react to what you are watching. Using the camera on your phone or tablet and a third-party app such as Hue Camera for Philips Hue (Apple), hueDynamic (Windows), or Hue Matcher (Android) and your lights will synchronise to meet the ambience of whatever you are watching. If for instance, you are plunging into the depths of the Indian Ocean with Sir David Attenborough in The Blue Planet your app will choose the right shade of blue to enhance your viewing. What's more, when tension mounts your lights will change to help intensify the moment! It is even possible to control your ambient lighting when viewing off-screen photographs and paintings. Simply download your preferred app, run through the settings, and position your phone or tablet towards the screen or image. If you're having a party or are simply immersing yourself in your sound apps such as Ambify or Hue Disco use algorithms to work seamlessly with your music. You can also create colour themes for different genres. Without delay, working in time with your music your lights will change to the beat of your tunes! With Ambify there is an app for your Mac enabling you to play music via iTunes, Spotify, Tidal or other streaming services through to your speakers. Alternatives Of course the Philips Hue system is not the only one on the market. Popular alternatives include: LIFX IKEA Tradfri - compatible with Philips Hue system MiLight Lighting EVER With price variations for starter kits and components it really is worth doing a little bit of your own research to find a system which best suits your needs. However, in our own research Philips Hue stands head and shoulders above the others and we can't wait to introduce it more into our own designs! "Though myriad alternatives for the Philips Hue exist on the market today, the original product still reigns superior in the smart lighting world. They offer the best compatibility, brightness, and controls." So there you have it, our guide to Philips Hue smart lighting a truly innovative, fun yet highly practical way to light your home! Hi ! Just looking at your plans briefly - it’s clear that due to cabinetry on all four walls - you won’t get a very big table in there ! You mentioned no wall units due to having enough storage elsewhere - but - if you had wall cabinets storage and storage to the patio doors on the top wall - you could take off some perimeter cabinets to give room for a table that’s larger than ‘just’ a four seater one ? There’s a lot more that could be done with this space in my professional opinion. Re colours - in a north facing room if you chose ‘winter’ colours you will need to warm it up a tad with woods and other tricks like tactile accessories. Scandi style for example uses whites and pale greys warmed up with pale woods and real or faux animal fur on benches or seats to add warmth ... Alternatively brilliant white cabinetry on pale Egyptian Cotton walls can look great too and is warmer than most grey toned paint . re lighting - if this drawings is true and it’s a flat extension then lighting could be LEDs in ceiling throughout - but if the new part is a vaulted ceiling then cable lighting might work or stronger LEDs higher up could also work but there will be a shadow line where the change in height happens. ... To summarise, this is ok - could be better and if worked on by someone with more of a ‘design driven’ background - time could be spent trying different colours for you and looking at lighting options and the table would be included in the drawings to show you what space you actually end up with ... you could see what it could look like in a more real image. I have white ceilings and have chrome. I never entertained any other colour. With brass now becoming popular again I think that will start to be another option.

White in my opinion looks cheap and plasticy. Chrome looks nicer.

I've just had this same decision to make and have gone for white this time for our kitchen/diner/conservatory. I really like gold accents so this swayed me away from brushed steel, altho I used them in my last house. I'm hoping the matt white will fade into the background

Thank you all so much for sharing your views.. I initially ordered white, with a thought that white lights will blend in the overall background, but then changed them into chrome after reading some feedback on line about white plastic changing colour after a while. Chrome however will require specific design detail to accompany its metallic colour. So I will most likely go back to white and will leave chrome in the bathroom where there’s plenty of matching detail.
All of your thoughts and opinions are super helpful and helped me out (plus made feel less lost trying to find answers to what it would seem simple questions 😊… who am I kidding - nothing is simple in design!😅).

I think white looks great but our electrician put in spotlights which had changeable rims for us - white, chrome and brushed steel. they are also dimmable. Just a thought anyway.

White metal rims in my white kitchen ceiling. I'll probably use chrome rims in my bathroom since I will have chrome fittings.
